Anthrax War, dir. by Bob Coen & Eric Nadler

I wanted to say a few words about this book because I consider it very patriotic—and I will explain why.

We, as Americans, would be well advised to take a closer look at our history and our definition of patriotism. With the passing of the insidiously-named
Patriot Act
which profoundly diminishes the civil liberties that veterans like myself and millions of others have fought to protect, we are now officially encouraged to
not
question authority. But, I ask you, is that patriotism? I don’t think so. I think patriotism is exactly the opposite. Patriotism isn’t blindly following whatever your leaders preach. Patriotism is questioning the government and seeking the truth wherever it leads. That’s what real patriotism is in a country that calls itself a Democracy. Blindly following our so-called leaders is
not
patriotism. Behaving like a flock of docile sheep that go wherever they are led is
not
patriotic.

There is a famous movie quote that most people are familiar with where, during a trial, a Marine Corps Colonel is pressed on revealing the truth to a questioning attorney, until it gets to the point where the Colonel has finally had enough and he screams:

You can’t handle the truth
!

That’s a good metaphor for the place that we’re in right now because apparently—based on their actions—our so-called leaders don’t seem to think that the American people are actually capable of handling the truth.

Isn’t it ridiculous that documents related to the JFK assassination are
still sealed
by order of our own government? For what reasons are they still sealed? To protect us? To protect us from
whom
exactly? From
them,
apparently. Why are we being treated like babies who can’t handle the truth? I’ve traveled this land far and wide, and I’ve come to quite a different conclusion: Americans
can
handle the truth.

This book is a perfect example of how Americans have not been trusted with the truth; it profiles case after case where we have often been intentionally misled and even clearly lied to on the most
basic
points of important events that changed history. The fact that we have been lied to about the JFK assassination is so obvious that it’s outrageous. The government cover-up was— and still
is
— so transparent that it’s ridiculous.

The assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy is another clear case of a cover-up because it has now been established unequivocally that the defendant, Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, was never
at any point
close enough to have fired the fatal shot.

Most Americans are
still
unaware that a jury in 1999 returned a verdict that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated by a conspiracy that
included agencies of the United States Government.

That pattern of lying to us has continued. As this book has also documented, the U.S. and British governments lied about Iraq’s ability to deliver “weapons of mass destruction.”
There was no WMD.
They made it up. Those lies led directly to the war in Iraq, the death of Dr. David Kelly, and the “outing” of CIA agent Valerie Plame as revenge for the attempts of her husband, Ambassador Joe Wilson, to try to get the truth out to the people that there
was
no mass threat from Iraq. But that was a truth that The Powers That Be did not want to hear because it interfered with their plans for war in the oil-rich Middle East. As a veteran who proudly served this country and as an American who cares about his country’s future, I think it is
absolutely disgraceful
that the office of the President of the United States was used to intentionally reveal a loyal covert Intelligence Operative and did so simply as a method of political revenge. That’s not the definition of a leader—that’s the definition of a
traitor.

Another disturbing trend in recent events is what I see as the very intentional manipulation of the word “conspiracy.” They would have us believe that any person who believes that something might possibly be a conspiracy has to be a demented individual. They make it sound like one would have to be crazy to even
suspect
that members of our government could take part in a conspiracy. I suggest that the truth of the matter is quite the contrary. As this book has clearly established, conspiracies are not some rare occurrence in history. They are
common.
They can and do happen all the time.

As we approach the fiftieth anniversary of the JFK assassination, it would seem well time that we, as Americans, come to terms with some very simple truths. I will offer a couple, just to get us started. Beyond the slightest doubt, John F. Kennedy was killed by a conspiracy involving many individuals. That isn’t some
theory
—that’s the only way it could have happened. Here’s another one. Beyond a doubt, the American government in the years following the JFK assassination has intentionally clouded the issue with intentional obfuscations of the true facts of the matter.

So why are we still being lied to about these cases? They seem to be missing a basic point about Democracy—they are
our employees.
They’re employed by us— We, The People. How
dare
they withhold the truth from us! Can you imagine if an employee in an office intentionally withheld pertinent information from her or his boss? With what justification? Because she or he didn’t think that their boss could
handle
it? That employee would rightfully be thrown out of that office on their ear, and that’s what should happen to a lot of people in Washington too. Somehow things have been twisted backwards, and we need to get them back the way that the founders of our country originally intended.

But remember something very important here. Our elected officials are officially
servants
of The People. Technically, they’re our
employees.
That’s the way this government was set up by its founders. I’d say that the time has now come when We, The People, need to oversee our employees quite a bit more carefully. We need to demand the truth.

There is one thing that is more powerful than all the armies in the world and that is an idea whose time has come. Mahatma Gandhi once said
The truth is far more powerful than any weapon of mass destruction.
Gandhi saw change coming; and it came. So did Martin Luther King; and again, change did come. It is also apparent today when we see the Occupy movements in almost every city in the country. It’s a time of change.

In my opinion, it should be a peaceful revolution, and one which starts and continues from a very simple and basic foundation—demanding the truth from our elected representatives.

Some Americans are so demoralized that they may think that the truth doesn’t even really matter anymore. I respectfully disagree. I think that we, as Americans, have an obligation to the great foundations of this Democracy, as well as a debt to those who have literally laid down their lives to protect it. As the pages of this book have revealed, we have not been told the truth. So now it’s up to us to demand it. We can start with the JFK assassination. We want
all
the records released and we want them
now.
Our elected officials need to be reminded of who their real employers are.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Americans
can handle
the truth.

And frankly, it’s time that we are allowed the opportunity.

A responsible citizen is one who participates in the formation of what is and is not acceptable behavior from their representatives in a Democratic form of government. Our elected officials need to be held responsible for their actions— that’s a basic principle of this Republic. And those same representatives have proved over and over again that they have their own agenda— such as the last few
wars,
for example— which are
not
the actual wishes of We, The People, whom they supposedly represent.

America has not officially declared war against any nation since December 8, 1941— yet we are now at war on a virtually continuous basis because, as Major General Smedley Butler cogently observed: “War is a racket.” It’s great for business and not just for weapons manufacturers either. It’s also great for
Halliburton,
and for
Bechtel,
and
General Electric,
and dozens of multibillion-dollar mega-corporations who basically run this country now by buying influence on Capitol Hill. Because corporations know what Will Rogers knew long ago; this country has the best politicians that money can buy.

What’s happening in our country? The First Amendment clearly states that “Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech.” But it was recently abridged anyway. It wasn’t covered much in the media but a new bill, HR 347, was recently passed by Congress and quietly signed into law by President Obama that gives federal agents sweeping powers and now makes it a felony offense for the crime of standing and protesting, determined at the discretion of the Secret Service. As Judge Andrew Napolitano put it, “it is a part of American history since Day One that we have a right to speak freely to, about and against those in the government.” But we no longer have it.

Lets’ speak plainly. We are talking here about would-be leaders who “rescue” the same bankers who are the very cause of our economic problems, instead of helping the people who have suffered as a result of Wall Street’s contemptuous actions. They even use public resources—
our money—
to fund the bailout of the same ruthless financiers, who planned, executed, and caused the whole mess that we find ourselves in. That’s not Democracy in action; that’s a gang of thieves feasting on the fat of this Republic. They are pigs at the trough, gorging themselves at our expense. We cannot and should not allow it to continue unchecked. It’s not what the founders of this great country intended. In fact, it’s
exactly
what they were trying to keep from happening.

I’ve had enough, and I suspect that if you are holding this book in your hands right now that you also have had enough of their lies and encroachment upon our civil liberties. Join me at my website: WeAintGotTimeToBleed.com

It’s a place where your comments and opinions are always welcome and also one where we can mobilize our outrage into effective action.

Commit yourself to the process of reclaiming our Democracy. We outnumber them and we have the power of truth and history on our side. We can turn this great Republic of ours back into the Democracy it was intended to be. It won’t be easy— but it can be done. And we have to do it, because no one else will.
