              Baissel was the first one to run from the castle. She saw the old dried blood on my clothes and cried, “I thought you were kidding about calling them gnomes! Now you know how lucky you are that I just punch you in the arm!”

              I laughed and wrapped her in my arms and told her that I’d missed not being abused by any female gnomes. We heard a squeal and knew that Jana was sounding the alarm. The girls came charging out to greet us. I gently hugged Amee and she laughed, “I’m pregnant, not glass! Hug me like you mean it, you silly man!”

              Mira grinned. “Since you brought that up, I guess now is as good a time as any. There is a contagious bug going around and I think that it’s caught by sleeping too close to Davie. First Amee caught it and now I’ve got it, too.”

              There was quiet for a moment, while they worked on the riddle. Then Jana squealed again. “Another baby is on the way! Hey, when’s it gonna be my turn to catch this bug?”

              “Just bounce on his lap whenever you get the chance,” teased Mira. “It will catch you sooner or later.”

              Laughing and joking, we moved inside and to our room to tell stories, and maybe Jana would listen… but I doubted it.

              Daniel Harris is an Independent writer and e-book author. Several of his books, Wizards of Eredwynn series, have been published by Createspace in paperback and in e-book format by Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing.  He has been a fan of the fantasy genre since Disney’s The Sword in the Stone.

              He was born in the late 60’s and was too young for the good times.  He spent his teenage years choking on hairspray in the 80’s.  Later he discovered that coffee actually adds hours to a day and now can’t live without it.  He is the father of four, three grown and one who thinks she is, living in Arkansas with his wife and youngest daughter.  The grown ones have given him lovely grandchildren that he intends to teach about The Sword in the Stone, too.
