“Mika and Alex have to pay for what they did to me.” Darcy hissed.

“So that’s how Nick got involved with Mika?” Jonah asked through tight lips, “you pulled him into this because you couldn’t hurt Alex after the overdose so you went after the next best thing. The two people he loved most in this world.”

“You don’t even know the half of it.” Darcy snapped.

“Why Jace Darcy?” I whispered. If I was going to die right now I needed to know why my brother betrayed me.

“Jace was meant for Olivia, but then I needed Jack to talk. I wanted Jack, he wanted Adam. We were perfect together. It’s kind of a shame I have to kill him though; the boy was a firecracker in bed. Should have told us Jack, might have kept him alive.”

“Never in a million years would I tell you what I know.” My father said standing with a grunt of pain.

Clicking the safety off her gun Darcy spoke with a smile in her voice. “Tell me or I kill your daughter.” She sang.

I was going to die whether my father told her or not so what came next was said with my eyes shut tightly waiting for the pain. “Don’t tell her anything.”

“Fine don’t tell me. Say goodbye to your father.”

“No you say goodbye.” Mason whispered in a deadly quiet voice as he pulled the trigger on his own gun. A noise so horrible there weren’t any words to describe it sounded through the room as the gun Darcy was holding fell to the floor.

Chapter 19

Still kneeling in the broken glass I stared at Darcy’s glossed over green eyes. Blood was flowing towards me along with other stuff I didn’t even want to think about.

Denny came running into the room, his eye searching the room looking for me. When he saw me he stumbled, his back hitting the wall.

“Come on Rachel you have to move.” Mason said close to my ear.

I tried to move but nothing was happening my legs refused to follow my brains instructions.

Picking me up Mason carried me to Denny. Putting his arms around me Denny took me in his arms. I guess I was shaking because Mason wrapped a coat around me while whispering about me going in to shock. I don’t know why I would be going into shock it’s not like I’m the one that killed Darcy. Killed. Darcy was dead.

“It was Rachel or Darcy. You did the right thing.” My dad said limping as he walked across the room.

A loud yelp of pain from Olivia pulled me back to the here and now. Darcy was dead but if it wasn’t her brains all over the floor it would have been mine. “Where is Lucca?”

Shaking his head Denny cupped my face. “I’m sorry baby I lost them. Darcy and Jace had a backup plan. They had a car waiting out back, he sped away too fast, I couldn’t keep up. Shark’s out now looking for the car.”

A loud sob broke through my lips before Denny could finish talking. The hopes of getting my baby back were fading fast.

“We need to go now.” Jonah said carrying a whimpering Olivia in his arms. “Olivia’s wrist is broken she needs to go to hospital.”

“Go.” My dad said, “I’ll call this in.”

“No.” Jonah and Denny yelled at the same time.

Looking between Denny and Jonah my father looked like he was about to explode from anger. “Three of us were fucking kidnapped and a girl is dead, we have to call the police.”

“Sorry Jack but I can’t let you do that.” JD said slowly pushing himself off the floor, blood flowing from a large cut across his forehead. “This is a DEA undercover investigation. If the police found out about this mess there are undercover agents that could be killed by Mika and his crew.”

“Fuck.” My dad cussed.

“What do we do with the body?” Mason asked his eyes locked on Darcy’s dead body.

“Burn the house to the fucking ground and let her burn too.” Denny snapped already moving us towards the door.

As Denny carried me from the house I saw Mason go to Darcy’s body, kneeling down he whispered to her. I couldn’t hear the words but I saw the tear fall from his eye.

The next hour passed by in a blur of panic and fear.

Jonah, Olivia and JD left for the hospital, Denny, Shark and Mason did whatever it was one did to burn down a house so there would be nothing left come tomorrow.

While they did that my dad and I sat in the back of Denny’s car.

I was scared for the life of Lucca so nothing was really making sense to me but there was a voice in the depth of my brain that knew what Denny, Shark and Mason were doing was very wrong. I had officially become a part of the Denver underground.

My body stung all over from the glass cuts, but not even the pain mattered right now. The only thing that mattered was finding Lucca because without Lucca my life and Denny’s would be broken.

“Baby girl.” My father whispered, his hand gripping my knee.

“Why would Jace do this to us?” I choked out.

“I did this to you.” My dad whispered back. “I made a mistake. All I wanted was for you to be safe, and for Lucca to be safe after he was born. I should have never done what I did, if Denny had been there from the beginning no one in the Denver underground would have touched you and Lucca.” I wanted to tell my dad it was ok, that I understood but I couldn’t because he was right. He should have never interfered in my life like that. And if we never found Lucca, Denny would only ever have had a week with his son. Forever would be too short, so a week was nothing. “I’m so sorry Rachel.”

Not knowing what to say I turned to watch Adam’s safe house start to burn.

“Tell me you understand Rachel.”

“I need some air.” I mumbled getting out of the car so I didn’t have to talk to my dad. Too much was going on I didn’t have the room in my head to figure out how I felt about what he’d done to Denny and me.

Shark was watching the house quickly being over taken by flames and Denny and Mason were having a heated discussion off the dirt road.

Walking closer I watched Mason throw his hands in the air and Denny shake his head aggressively.

“You’re not thinking right. You took a life tonight Mason its fucking with your head.” Denny said loud enough for me to hear all the way across the street.

“Yeah and maybe if I hadn’t taken that life you and Rachel would have Lucca right now.” Mason yelled back his voice so harsh Denny took a step back looking like he’d just been hit.

“Mason you saved Rachel’s life. Stop acting like you did something wrong.”

“I did do something wrong!” Mason yelled. Pushing Denny out of the way Mason stormed down the dirt road, passed me without evening looking my way then got in his car and sped away.

I was about to go to Denny and found out what had just happened when my cell rang. Pulling my phone out I figured it would be Olivia so I didn’t look at the caller ID just picked up the call.

“Olivia?”

“Don’t say my name and do exactly what I say.” Jace said in a cold, hard voice. “If you want Lucca back you need to get Dad to tell you what Mika wants to know.”

“Darcy is dead Jace what Dad knows doesn’t matter anymore.” I whispered into the phone, turning my back so no one could see me.

“I need to know what Dad does. And if you want Lucca back you need to get it from him.”

“How the hell do you expect me to do that?”

“That’s your job. Just get him to talk. And if I hear one police car or fucking Denny coming after me I will kill Lucca Rachel.”

“What the fuck happened to you Jace?”

“You have no idea what has happened to me. Now get me the damn information.”

“How will I get it to you?”

“I’ll call back in one hour.” Jace snapped and then the line went dead.

The world spun as the fate of my child rested solely on my shoulders.

“Rachel?” Denny yelled running towards me, followed by Shark. “What’s wrong?” He asked resting his hand on my shoulder.

Looking at Denny I told not a lie but not the truth. “I just want my baby back.” I whispered followed by a stream of tears.

Denny pulled me into his chest and wrapped his arms tightly around me.

“Take her home Denny.” I heard Shark say. “There is nothing more you can do right now. I have people looking for them. When they have anything I will call.”

“The house?” Denny asked.

“I’ll watch it, go.” Shark said jerking his head towards the cars.

Lifting my face out of Denny’s chest I looked up at him. “I want to go home.”

Nodding Denny stepped back and took my hand. “Then let’s go.”

Denny started to walk me towards the car but I quickly stopped him with a hand on his arm. “Can dad come to? I’d like him to be close.”

Staring at me for half a second Denny nodded then led me to the car.  Once home I’d have to find a way to separate my father and Denny, then I’d have to get my father to tell me what he had on Mika.

How I was going to do this I had no idea, I just knew I had to get the information Jace wanted no matter what.

Chapter 20

Once we got home I told dad to have a seat and listen for the phone while I took care of Denny. It wasn’t a lie or really a part of the plan to get dad to talk. Denny looked like hell and I was positive he was feeling like hell too. To go from not dealing with Vinnie’s death, to revealing why he really left me and ending it with Lucca being taken and him unable to get him back must be killing him.

“Go change and clean up the glass cuts baby, I’ll be up in a minute to do the same.”

Denny looked at me for several minutes before nodding and heading up stairs.

Making sure dad had also done what I’d told him I walked quickly into the kitchen. In the kitchen it took less than a minute for me to find Olivia’s anxiety medicine, the little fun ones that put her to sleep according to Jonah. Crushing two pills up I added them to a glass of water.

Taking a deep breath I pushed the guilt down and went up to Denny’s bedroom.

Denny sat at the bottom of the bed talking on his cell in only black boxers, the glass cuts and blood standing out as proudly as his tattoos.

“Keep looking but be careful Shark has people looking too, probably DEA agents. No, I’m not sure whose side he is playing on anymore.”

Denny, mumbled a bye and hung up the phone as I closed the door. “You just had to jump through the window didn’t you?”

Laughing without humor Denny shook his head. “What can I say I like to make an entrance.”

“Who was on the phone?”

“Cole. The boys are all out looking but so far they haven’t seen the car.” Denny said throwing his cell behind him.

Straddling his hips I handed him the water. “Drink it all you need it.”

Denny drank the entire glass in one go. Well that was easy.

“What are you doing Rachel?” Denny asked putting the glass on the ground.

“What do you mean?”

“Five seconds ago you were a babbling mess now you’re Mrs. Calm. What’s going on?”

Shit, searching my brain I came up with what I hope was a good excuse. “You need someone to take care of you too.” Not really a lie. “Let me be the strong one just for a little while Denny.”

With those little words Denny’s whole body pushed into mine and his head dropped on to my shoulder. “I failed. I failed Lucca. It’s my job to keep him safe and save him when he needs it. I didn’t do either.”

“It’s our job Denny. But it is not our fault, this is Jace’s fault.”

“I should be out looking for him.”

“You can’t too many DEA agents and you said it yourself we don’t know if Shark is on our side anymore. All Shark has to do is say the words and you’re done. Not just you but everyone working for you.”

Falling back on to his back Denny covered his face with his hands. “I’m never going to shake loose of Vinnie am I? The man is fucking dead and his eyes still haunt me every waking moment and his business will always be my business. I guess it’s what I deserve though right?”

Denny’s self-pity broke my heart; it was also something I didn’t know how to deal with. Not in the almost two years I’d known Denny had I ever seen remorse for what he did for Vinnie.

“You said you almost killed someone for Vinnie, what made you stop?”

“What?” Denny asked his eyes dilating from the medicine.

“Why didn’t you kill that person for Vinnie?”

Pulling me down on to his chest, Denny’s hand ran up my back then cupped my face. He spoke across my lips. “I convinced everyone and almost myself that I’d never get you and Lucca back. When I went to kill the person Vinnie told me to, which was actually Olivia’s brother we just didn’t know at the time. I was seconds away from leaving to do it when I thought about you and Lucca and knew that if I killed for Vinnie then that would be it. I would never get you back. You, me and Lucca would be done for good, there would be no going back. I wasn’t ready to let you go. You’re the love of my life Rachel and Lucca is the most important thing to come out of my life.”

My life was falling apart, my brother was using my son to get information out of our father and I was using two people I loved dearly to get Lucca back but in that moment listening to Denny explain why he didn’t kill I felt a little more in love with him. Weird I know, but it was my weird and this was my Denny. The good, bad and ugly. For the love of Denny hell here I come. Kissing him like I’d never kissed him before, I thrust my tongue into his mouth letting the purest taste I’d ever tasted wash over me.

Needing more I broke my mouth away from his and moved down his body. Taking his nipple into my mouth I sucked hard loving the cold metal of his nipple bar on my tongue. Denny moaned loudly and gripped my hair holding me to his chest. Before I could switch to the other nipple Denny ripped my shirt over my head and attacked the button on my jeans before pulling me roughly back to his mouth.

The kiss was wild and out of control and in that moment I couldn’t tell where Denny began and I ended. We weren’t two people, we were one.

I was pretty sure we were on our way to having the hottest sex of both our lives when his mouth slipped from mine, and his hands loosened in my hair.

I looked up to find Denny fighting the drug trying to put him to sleep. Kissing him again I kept my eyes open and watched his eyes shut fully.
