From the direction of the doorway, I heard Cathy gasp. She stood at the threshold, wide-eyed and pale, clutching at the jambs with both hands.

“I heard shots.” She jerked a thumb at Bostock’s body. “Is he…is he…?”

“Yeah,” I said. “Call 9-1-1, honey, and then see if you can get some sense into Cybil here.” I pointed at the naked woman, who had just vomited on the floor.

I kneeled by Mrs. Drummond. She held her torn wrist with the left hand.

“It’s funny,” she said. “I feel no pain.”

I wasn’t sure she was talking about her hand.
