old hands ran
over my thighs, yanking me from sleep. Before I could move, a heavy weight crawled on top of me and held me in place. Pressing me into the mattress.

“Good morning, mate.” Piers pulled my knees around his naked hips and rocked against me. Playful and teasing. The bastard. “It’s moving day.”

I smiled but kept my eyes closed. “Five more minutes.”

“That depends.” He hummed and lined his dick up with where I was already so wet for him. Where I was always wet for the man I’d chosen as my mate. I gasped as he nudged his way inside, as he stretched me open. As he took what I so freely gave him.

“On what?”

He grunted as he went deep, holding still to enjoy the sensation before rocking back and forth. “On what you want to do with those five minutes.”

I finally opened my eyes, taking in his smile, his scruff, and his bright eyes. Irresistible. “You. Just you.”

He grinned and thrust in earnest. “Thank fuck for that, Doc. Because if you didn’t give me consent, I might have cried.”

“Doubt it, but I could always tell you to stop, just to see.”

He chuckled and kissed me, pulling away to whisper, “If you tell me to stop, you get no wake-up orgasms.”

“Heaven forbid.” I lost myself in his movements, in the way he knew my body. In the way he played me and drove me wild. Quiet moments like these were my favorite, when it was just him and me. When we could be together, alone and free to play and learn and be. So much better than I ever thought life with another person could be.

Piers nuzzled my neck, licking the spot where he’d given me my claiming bite. It overlapped the one Saern had forced on me, of course. Piers was nothing if not territorial when it came to me. He’d bitten that spot hard, wanting to erase the memory. Wanting to start new.

And we were.

Within a few hours, we would be loading my father in the old VW bus Piers had purchased and heading deeper into the mountains to join the wolf pack his cousin had mated into. The thought of being involved with wolf shifters again terrified me but not as much as the threat of Mick finding us without support. Piers swore he’d make sure everything was safe for me and my dad. He already had, breaking in to the nursing home with me to get my dad out before Mick could get to him. It had been a rough few days, and I was sure we’d lose him once or twice, but my dad was still strong. He made it through the changes with my help. He’d never get better, never regain his thoughts or personality, but that was okay. He was still my dad, and with my medical degree, I could take care of him better that any hired assistant. So I would—Piers had made sure of it.

The drive would be tough, the pack of wolves scary, but I trusted Piers to take care of all of us. Trusted everything about him. He was my mate, the man I claimed. My heart.

We made love for far longer than five minutes, both of us whispering promises to each other. Falling into our bliss together, clinging to one another with no space between us. And even then, when we’d sated ourselves for the first time that day, we didn’t separate or move. We stayed huddled under the blanket, sweat-slicked skin pressed together, lips finding lips for soft kisses. Perfect.

But even perfection had to end.

Piers groaned and rolled, keeping me tucked into his side. “We need to get up so we can get on the road.”

I sighed, not wanting to let go but knowing it was time. A better life was ahead of us. A better world. He’d promised, and a dragon wouldn’t break his promise.

“Okay,” I said, stretching and pulling off the covers. “Let’s get a move on, dragon.”

Piers pulled me to my feet and kissed me again. “Your dragon.”

And he was. Forever.

“My dragon.”

About the Author

A
storyteller
from the time she could talk, Ellis grew up among family legends of hauntings, psychics, and love span.ning decades. Those stories didn’t always have the happiest of endings, so they inspired her to write about real life, real love, and the difficulties therein. From farmers to *crane werewolves, store clerks to witches—if there’s love to be found, she’ll write about it. Ellis lives in the Chicago area with her husband, daughters, and two tiny fish that take up way too much of her time.
