It was the noise that woke her. The sun was high in the sky, its insidious warmth filtering through the thick mesh of the canvas homeley, the cloth door covering pulled aside to allow the warmth of the sun’s rays to touch the bare foot poking out from her coverlet. Her head hurt, her throat was dry but she smiled as she remembered the feast of the night before. She’d drunk rich yellow wine, her first, and ate food until her belly ached with its load and her head swam with the madness of the moment. It wasn’t every day a Nomad came of age and the sheer headiness of her brother’s time was a celebration rarely seen within her people. Food had been gathered for weeks, her family hoarding it for just this time, going hungry in their need to commemorate Luki’s coming to manhood.

She froze; a rich coppery smell invaded her mind, an odour she instinctively recognised. A soft slurping was followed by groaning gulps insulting her ears but the feasting was over, the food all gone and the people would be returning to normality under the scope of the drying sun.
