Christina's Bear (6 page)

Bull had
told Christina everything he knew about shifting into a bear—but he never asked
her to change for him. It was something he wanted, but he’d been afraid to ask.
A bear was a difficult animal to own as a shifter. Their size made it difficult
to hide if necessary and traveling around a lot, he’d lived a few places where
shifting was impossible.

Now that
he’d found Christina, he was never moving again. He’d spent long hours learning
the forest surrounding the city and, while no place could be absolutely safe,
it was close. He would always feel the need to protect Christina, but if she
changed, he would feel comfortable letting her go into the forest alone
sometimes.

He could
feel Christina’s eyes on him, but he kept on driving in silence. After work,
he’d showered and told her he wanted to show her something. They’d jumped in
the truck and hadn’t said a word since.

“Almost
there.” Bull dared a glance her way before maneuvering the truck down a small
paved road near the edge of town.

“Where are
we going?” Christina finally asked him.

“It’s a
surprise, but you’ll see in a minute.”

Bull
drove a few more feet and the small paved road, more like a driveway, led to a
large open plot of land. Dirt covered the ground of the vast space. Every piece
of greenery had been dug up within the property lines. The space looked oddly
bare surrounded by the forest of trees.

Bull
grabbed his backpack and they walked toward the center where he had left some
rocks and plywood earlier.

He
cleared his throat, knelt down and pulled out the rolled up pieces of paper.

Christina
watched Bull pull out the rolled up pieces of paper and spread them out on the
ground, securing each corner with one of the rocks. He went back to his
backpack and pulled out a large nail.

Bull
cleared his throat several times. She had known he was nervous in the truck,
but she hadn’t realized how nervous until he stood next to her clearing his
throat and staring at the nail in his hand.

Christina
glanced at the pieces of paper and realized they were blueprints. He was going
to build something here. Two months ago, she was afraid he was going to move
out and leave her alone again. Now she was sure it was completely the opposite.

She
hugged his bicep.

“Bull,”
she waited for him to look at her. “Tell me.”

“Christina,
I love you. Will you marry me?” She opened her mouth to answer and he added,
“Wait, don’t answer that. I’m doing this all wrong.”

“It
seems perfect to me.” She kissed his arm. “Yes, I’ll marry you. I love you very
much. What’s the nail for?”

He
cleared his throat yet again. “I bought this land. I want to build us a house.
I’ve made some blueprints, but they can be changed if you don’t like them. I
know this spot will be safe for us—for you—if you decide to become like me.” It
was Bull’s turn not to take a breath.

“Do you
want me to become like you?” Christina asked hopefully. She’d wanted him to ask
her and feared he never would.

“More
than anything.” He turned to face her. “It’s hard being a bear—it is—but I’m
selfish enough to ask you anyway. I want to share everything with you,
including the mating bond, and the only way to do that is to ask you to
change.”

“It’s
what I want, too. I’ve been waiting for you to ask me.”

Their mouths
met in a quick kiss and Bull hugged her close. A few tears of happiness fell
and Christina wiped them away with her fingers. She stepped out of his arms,
ready to look at the blueprints.

Bull
used the nail to prick his finger in one swift motion. Christina jumped at the
abrupt movement, mildly startled until she processed what he was doing.

When
Bull held out his finger, she closed her lips around it, licking the open
wound. Soon she would be able to shift into a bear with her mate.

Bull
pulled his finger loose and reached into the backpack for something else. He
pulled out an oval wood sign with their names etched in the front and a hammer.
He walked toward a wooden post she hadn’t noticed before and, using the nail
he’d pricked his finger with, nailed the sign to the post. He marked their
territory and the nail that bound them together would always be a part of their
home. Her eyes teared up again at the gesture, but even though they were happy
tears, she didn’t let them fall.

When Bull
stood up, he said, “So, I thought the front door could go here…”

He
proceeded to walk out the entire blueprint without looking at the paper once.
It was obvious he’d thought of everything, including a “bear door.” She
wouldn’t change a thing.

Everything
was perfect.

He was
perfect—perfect for her.

whether to trust her heart or run from the only man she’s ever wanted.

About the Author

Jane has always been a writer. Even when
she took a break from it for a few years, she couldn’t keep the stories from
filling her head. As an avid romance reader, she finally decided her stories
needed to be free, and she started writing again.

Reading and liking all genres of romance;
