“Go on. She’s a good lass—doesn’t cry overmuch.” Elspeth held Akira out. “Hold her.”

Titus clapped the man’s shoulder. “Akira’s the likeness of her mother.”

“Aye, she is.” Greum grinned and took the babe in his arms. Instantly, she launched into a healthy wail. “But she does no’ take too kindly to the likes of me.”

Elspeth took her. “She’s hungry is all. Go, sit by the fire whilst I feed her. Seona will fill your trenchers.”

After they’d made themselves comfortable around the hot coals and their bellies were full, Titus regarded Greum. “What news?”

“The Romans tried to storm Dunpelder once more before winter. When they failed, Dulcitius ordered all gates to Hadrian’s Wall boarded, never to be opened again. Since, we haven’t seen an orange tunic north of the wall.”

Titus’s gut clenched at the mention of his nemesis’s name. But when he glanced across the fire at Elspeth’s face, glowing amber with the flickers of the flame, Akira cradled in her arms, gurgling and playing with her hair, calm filled Titus’s chest. He couldn’t imagine himself anywhere else. In a short time, he’d built a home with his woman, and Alerio and Seona had become close-knit members of their new clan.

“And what of Queen Valeria?” Elspeth asked. “Are she and her bairn well?”

Greum grinned at Manas. “She birthed a healthy lad—named him Brude after Taran’s da.”

Alerio draped his arm across Seona’s shoulders. “I’m glad to hear it. And they’re both well?”

“Aye,” Manas said. “And the queen’s going to let me give Brude riding lessons as soon as he’s old enough.”

Elspeth smiled. “How quickly the memories of Dunpelder return. Still much the same, I imagine.”

“Aye,” Greum said. “But not without ye. I sought ye out to ask ye to come back.”

Titus’s throat thickened. If Greum had come in January, he would have been ready to burn the roundhouse and head back to Dunpelder in a blizzard. But after the weather turned and Akira was born, he’d grown a fondness for this island, and grown ideas about building a self-sufficient, thriving home here.
But what if Elspeth wants to return?

He looked across the fire and caught her gaze. Without blinking, she slowly shook her head. “I think not.” She stood and strode to Titus’s side. Placing Akira in his arms, she kissed his forehead. “We’ve made our home here, and this is where we’ll stay.”

Titus grinned. This was where they would stay in their very own kingdom. This was where they would raise their children, and this was where they would live out their lives—far away from Rome and war—far away from tyranny. Together they would build a new clan upon the foundation of the Pict Creed: honor—loyalty—duty—freedom.

REVIEW FOR
RESCUED BY THE CELTIC WARRIOR

“Jarecki possesses this magic of sweeping readers off their feet with her enchanting, untamed tales. I am anything except immune as each time I read a story penned by her, I fall more and more in love with both the character and the plots.”
