Unsteady on feet that still thought they should be webbed, he stumbled, but he managed to lean forward and put his hands on the bank in front of him. Something heavy landed in the water behind him. Ori tore his gaze away from the lantern and looked over his shoulder.

Somehow, Raynard had missed the bank and come down into the water. Concern rolled through Ori’s mind. Then Raynard’s hand landed on Ori’s shoulder, and it was obvious that a dry landing hadn’t been Raynard’s priority.

He hadn’t touched down within feet of Ori’s bare arse by accident. If Ori’s instincts upon shifting back were all about serving, submitting, and being sure of his master’s acceptance, then Raynard’s instincts were possessive, dominant, and intent on marking his territory.

There was no need for either of them to fight against instincts that matched together so perfectly.

Ori arched his back, dipped his head, and gave all control over to his master.

Raynard quickly altered his grip on Ori’s shoulder, slipping a length of leather beneath his palm. Ori turned his head and saw his collar resting against the curve of his neck. Raynard hadn’t dropped it when he shifted back to his human form. Ori moaned his approval.

A second later he let out a whimper as Raynard rubbed his cock head against Ori’s arse. Pre-cum smeared against his hole. They didn’t have lube, but Ori was so relaxed after his flight that he was sure that lake water, spit, and mutual desperation would be more than enough to ease their way. He squirmed in Raynard’s grasp, pushing back against Raynard’s cock.

Raynard didn’t let Ori take much control of their movements, but he seemed to accept Ori’s silent answer. He began to rock his hips, pushing forward in small increments that had to have tested his self-control to the limit this soon after his shift.

Ori gasped, throwing his head back. He stared up at the night sky, wondering if swan shifters were allowed to howl at the moon, or if that pleasure was reserved solely for lupine shifters.

Eventually, Raynard pushed forward a final inch, and his cock was completely sheathed in Ori’s arse. All his thoughts dissolved. The world was nothing more than a tight grip, friction, and the rattle of a tag on his collar as it bounced against his shoulder every time Raynard thrust deep inside him.

Bliss danced and twirled in Ori’s veins, making him dizzy. His footing slipped in the shallow lake water, but Raynard guided his descent and kept their bodies together.

Kneeling on the sloping bank with just his ankles in the water, Ori bowed his head toward the mud and grass. Unable to remain still, all he could do was push back into his master’s thrusts and trust Raynard to take care of everything else. His cock bounced beneath him, hard and desperate to be touched, but he knew better than to try and reach for his shaft—and not just because the attempt would likely see him fall flat on his face.

His master would decide if his submissive should feel anything touch his erection. His master would decide if his submissive would be allowed to come. Ori didn’t need to make any decisions. He didn’t need to think. The world was a very simple, very wonderful place.

Raynard altered the angle of his thrusts. Each movement he made now found Ori’s prostate. Ori desperately tried not to come. Strands of grass came away in his hands as he fumbled at the bank.

“Come.”

It wasn’t easy to speak that soon after shifting. Raynard hadn’t given him permission because it was the easy option. But if Raynard had to work hard to issue the command, it was the easiest thing in the world for Ori to obey it.

Raynard’s next thrust sent ecstasy shooting through every nerve ending in Ori’s body. Terrified that they might be disturbed by a would-be hero trying to stop a murder if he was too loud, Ori bit down on his lip and managed not to scream as he came.

His cum landed in ropes on the damp ground beneath him. One more thrust, and Raynard’s grip on Ori’s hips tightened. He held Ori firmly in place to receive every drop of his semen.

Ori’s strength lasted until Raynard fell still, but not a moment longer. His arms gave way. He started to topple forward.

Raynard slid one arm around Ori and caught his weight just in time to slow his descent. He lowered Ori gently to the ground and encouraged him to roll onto his side. Barely separating their bodies, Raynard spooned behind him.

Ori automatically pressed his back against Raynard’s chest, desperate to be as close to him as possible and unable to hide that desire when his instincts were so close to the surface.

Raynard’s body was warm against Ori, but even those bits of him that weren’t benefiting from Raynard’s body heat didn’t feel cold. Ori smiled, hazily pleased that the weather had fallen in with Raynard’s inclination to play in the park, just as perfectly as everything else had.

He let out a happy little sound as Raynard slipped his collar around his neck and fastened it in place.

“Does that mean you think that us flying together was a suitable way to start celebrating your birthday, fledgling?”

“Start?” Ori asked. “You mean finish, sir.”

“I know what I mean,” Raynard corrected. “And we both know your birthday started at midnight.”

Ori closed his eyes and silently cursed himself for every kind of fool. “You didn’t forget.”

“A few weeks ago, it would never have occurred to you that I would have forgotten. And, if you had thought it, you’d have spoken to me about it.”

Ori threaded his fingers through the grass in front of him.

“Your confidence was growing very nicely,” Raynard pointed out.

“Everyone seemed so determined to remind you that… Everything was about me being a… You never wanted to own a swan,” Ori finally rushed out.

Raynard’s grip on him tightened. “I never expected to,” he corrected. “I never knew a swan would want to submit to anyone; that I could teach a swan about submission without hurting him.”

Ori shook his head. Squirming against his master’s body, he turned around so they lay face to face. “You’ve never hurt me, sir.”

Raynard smiled at him in the gloom. “I know better now.”

Ori studied him carefully. “You still would have preferred…”

“Have I said one bad word about you being a swan since I put this back on you?” He gave the tag on his collar a sharp tug.

Ori shook his head.

“I said I’d find the type of submission you were most suited to, and I did. As it happens, it’s a kind that I’ve found is very much to my taste.”

Ori glanced up and met his gaze. There could be no doubting Raynard’s honesty, or his certainty.

“But hiding the things that worry you from me, lying to me by omission? Not acceptable. I told you before that I’m the only one who decides what constitutes good behaviour in this relationship. I decide when a matter is closed and you no longer need to worry about it. And I told you that you didn’t need to worry about being a swan a long time ago.”

Ori swallowed. “The punishment, sir?”

Raynard considered him seriously. “On this occasion, we’ll say that you’ve punished yourself enough by putting yourself into such a needless panic for the last fortnight.”

Ori opened his mouth to object, but Raynard covered his lips with his hand. “I’m being lenient because it’s your birthday, and I intend for us to enjoy the day together. Do not push your luck less than thirty seconds after I’ve reminded you who defines acceptable behaviour and decides upon punishments.” He took his hand away. “However, you certainly will be punished if you make the same mistake again.”

Ori nodded. “Yes, sir.”

“To be clear—if anything makes you doubt your place with me, or whether I want you as my submissive, you will tell me. If we are alone, there’s no excuse for you not to do so immediately. If we’re in company, you may wait until we are next alone. You won’t be punished for having doubts, but you will be punished for not telling me right away. Any questions about that?”

Ori shook his head.

“Any questions about anything else?”

“That’s why you lied to Mr. Hamilton about the day I was born, sir?” Ori asked, cautiously. “So we could spend my birthday together.”

Raynard’s smile turned slightly rueful. “Most days, I have no issue with the nest requiring some of your time, but there are some occasions when I have no intention of sharing you. When I want you all to myself—that’s what I’ll have. Master’s prerogative.”

Unable to think of anything else to say, Ori resorted to an always acceptable, “Yes, sir.”

“Good. Now, go and get dressed before you freeze.”

“I’m not cold, sir,” Ori promised, not at all inclined to move from within Raynard’s embrace.

“Yes, you are, you just can’t feel it because you’ve just shifted.” Raynard sat up and pulled himself to his feet.

Ori quickly scrambled up to follow him.

As they both headed up the bank toward the bench, Ori ran his eyes up and down Raynard’s naked body and grinned. Even muddy and damp, his master was as perfect as ever.

Raynard nodded to the little lantern as they reached the bench. “Make a wish, fledgling.”

It wasn’t a fancy cake. It was one candle, not twenty-two. They weren’t at a party. There weren’t hundreds of people there who wanted to give him lots of presents.

Raynard opened the little glass door on the lantern.

Ori smiled. Alone with his master, naked, muddy, and well screwed—they both knew that was far more to his taste than any of the fuss the nest had arranged.

Ori knelt down alongside his master’s feet.

He had to think for a moment before he could make a wish. The one he’d made at the nest had already come true, now that everything was once more settled between him and his master. But there was no rule against wishing that things could stay just as they were forever, was there? Ori closed his eyes and blew out the candle.

Silence fell over them as they dried the worst of the muddy lake water from their bodies and got dressed. But it wasn’t like the silences of the past two weeks. There was nothing unspoken or misunderstood hanging in the air around them.

Ori looked out over the lake, trying to picture how they had looked flying together. It hadn’t been something he’d even known that he wanted, let alone asked for. For that matter, it wasn’t something his master had
offered
him for his birthday. Raynard’s presents never came with wrapping paper or question marks, they came with orders—just the way Ori preferred.

“Time to go home, fledgling.”

Ori turned around and smiled up at Raynard. Birthdays might come and go, but going home with his master—that would always be something to celebrate.

Duck!

Raised among humans, Ori Jones only discovered he was an avian shifter six months ago. Unable to complete a full shift until he reaches his avian maturity, he still can’t be sure of his exact species.

But with species comes rank, and rank is everything to the avians. When a partial shift allows the elders to announce that they believe Ori to be a rather ugly little duckling, he drops straight to the bottom rung of their hierarchy.

Life isn’t easy for Ori until he comes to the attention of a high ranking hawk shifter. Then the only question is, is Ori really a duck—and what will his new master think when the truth eventually comes out?

Magpie

Everet has found his perfect place in the nest. As a raven, he’s ideally suited to his new role in the nest’s security flock. Some of the jobs it entails have been far more enjoyable than others, but when he’s called to retrieve a magpie, who’s got himself into trouble in a local human club, it becomes a truly life changing experience.

Magpie shifters have always been looked down on by other avians. Just as attracted to shiny things in their human bodies as they are in their avian forms, everyone knows they’ll do anything for money—and they’re not above stealing what they can’t get by more honest means.

Kane knows what being a magpie means, and he’s got the bruises to show for it. When Everet rescues him from his latest scrape, Kane knows better than to believe the raven will actually take an interest in him and his welfare, but it’s just possible that Everet is different to any other man Kane has ever met.
