Walter married, before 19 October, 1378 (although no evidence exists as to where):
Margaret
She was the daughter of Sir David de Barclay, Lord of Brechin, by Janet, daughter of Sir Edward Keith of Synton. She died before 1 August, 1404.
Issue of marriage:

He was created Earl of Caithness around

.1428/30. He was killed in 1431 in a foray at Inverlochy, Inverness-shire.
(ii)
David
He died after February, 1433, in England.
David married an Englishwoman whose identity is unknown, and had issue:
(a)
Robert
He rose to the rank of knight, and was known as the Master of Atholl. He was granted a dispensation to marry one Margaret Ogilvy on 29 January, 1428/9, but there is no evidence to show that the marriage ever took place. He was executed in March, 1437, in Edinburgh for his part in the murder of James I.
On 1 August, 1404, Walter Stewart was granted a dispensation to marry Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Graham of Kincardine, but no evidence exists to show that the marriage actually took place. Elizabeth married Sir John Stewart of Dundonald, bastard son of Robert II, in 1407/8.

Elizabeth
She married David Lindsay, 1st Earl of Crawford (1360?–1407), in 1380 or 1384 (dispensation granted on 22 February, 1374/5), and had issue:
1  Alexander, 2nd Earl of Crawford (1387?–1438); he married Marjorie Dunbar (
d
. after 1429), perhaps a daughter of the Earl of Dunbar, and had issue.
2  David, Lord of Newdosk; he later became a priest.
3  Gerard (
d
. before 1421).
4  Ingelram (?), Bishop of Aberdeen (
d
.1458).
5  Marjorie; she married Sir William Douglas of Lochleven.
6  Elizabeth; she married Sir Robert Keith.
7  Elizabeth; she married Robert, Lord Erskine (
d
.1451/2); she may have been confused with her sister of the same name, and it is possible that they were one and the same person.
8  Isabella; she married Sir John Maxwell of Pollok, and had issue.

She married Sir William Douglas of Nithsdale in

.1387, and had issue:
1  William, Lord of Nithsdale (
d
. after 1419).
2  Egidia (

. after 1438); she married Henry St Clair, Earl of Orkney (

.1421), and had issue.
Egidia died after 1388.

ROBERT II
He died on 19 April, 1390, at Dundonald Castle, Ayrshire, and was buried in Scone Abbey, Perthshire.
He was succeeded by his son John, who took the name Robert upon his accession.

ROBERT III
He was christened John, and took the name Robert upon his accession. He was born around
c.
1337/40. He was created Earl of Carrick on 22 June, 1368, and styled Earl of Atholl on 17 October (?),
c.
1379, for this occasion only. He succeeded his father as King of Scotland on 19 April, 1390, and was crowned on 14 August, 1390, at Scone Abbey, Perthshire.
Robert III married

Annabella
She was the daughter of Sir John Drummond of Stobhall by Mary, daughter of Sir William Montifex, and she was born in

.1350. She was crowned Queen Consort on 15 August, 1390, at Scone Abbey, Perthshire. She died in
c.
October (‘Harvest-tide’), 1401, at Scone Palace, Perthshire, and was buried in Dunfermline Abbey, Fife.
Issue of marriage:

He was born on 24 October, 1378. He was created Earl of Carrick between 19 April, 1390, and 2 January, 1391, and Duke of Rothesay (a title borne henceforth by the eldest son of a Scottish sovereign) on 28 April, 1398. He was created Earl of Atholl on 6 September, 1398. He died on 26/27 March, 1402, in prison at Falkland Palace, Fife; he is said to have been starved to death, but he probably succumbed to dysentery. He was buried in Lindores Abbey, Fife.
David married, in February, 1399/1400, at Bothwell Church:
Marjorie
She was the daughter of Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas, by Joan, daughter of Thomas Moray of Bothwell. David Stewart was her first husband. She married secondly Sir Walter Haliburton of Dirleton (
d
. by 1447) (son of Isabella Stewart of Albany, granddaughter of Robert II) in 1403, and had issue:
1  John, Lord Haliburton (

.1452/4); he married Janet (
d
. after 1493), daughter of Sir William Seton of Seton, and had issue.
2  Walter (

. after 1433); he married Katherine, daughter of Alexander Chisholme.
3  Robert.

.1468), daughter of Sir Patrick Graham by Euphemia, granddaughter of Robert II, and had issue.
2  William; he married Marjorie Stewart, and had issue.
