“Mocha Latte Grande please!” I had to shout but I prayed the barista heard me. Without my infusion of coffee in the morning I was hardly manageable. She nodded slightly but didn’t make eye contact so I moved over towards the register hoping my drink would come up shortly, otherwise I would ask the girl at the register to help me. Nadia was already standing there holding her decaf tea. How she drinks that stuff I’ll never know. As I looked over her shoulder I noticed she was reading the company e-mail from that morning.

Anything good?”

She shook her head,
“Not really. And it looks like my latest piece isn’t going to make it in Saturday’s paper either.”

She shut her phone off and put it back in her Louis Vuitton bag.

“Well you had a good run of it. But we all know how new editors are, never wanting to give the good spots to the veterans. But just give it a few weeks when all these newbies fade away and we’ll still be here writing the best work there is out there.” I was positive about this, this was my third editor since I began writing for The Gazette. I knew how things worked but Nadia was still pretty fresh and got nervous from time to time.

She shrugged,
“Whatever. Human plight isn’t really interesting anymore when readers have reality TV. I’ve no idea why I decided to go into human rights issues. Blah, and it’s so depressing. At least you write the gossip column.”

HA! Yeah right. You mean when there’s a gossip column. My work hasn’t been in the Saturday paper in two months. And the only thing I’ve had in the Sunday editions are wedding announcements and obituaries. I’m so tired of writing the same old stuff. But…”

Newspapers aren’t making the money they used to. Readership is down, ad sales are down, life sucks for writer,” she finished for me.

Now where have I heard that before?” The barista had finally come to the registrar and I handed over my cash.

Nadia l
aughed, “Oh I don’t know from our super positive boss? Like seven days a week? What the hell was I thinking getting into newspapers?”

She shook her head as we
walked away from the register and prepared to stand out in the pouring rain on our way to the office. I put my umbrella up over both of us to shield us from the blinding rain but I knew it wouldn’t do much good. Seattle rain was the absolute worst. “Oh I don’t know, because you wanted a life of adventure!” She scowled at me as she felt the sarcasm dripping off my words and opened the door onto the busy street.

We stood shivering in much too cold conference room all clutched onto our smartphones hoping t
hat we would be the next writer to get a break on the front of the Sunday news. My hair was still damp from running through the rain but I couldn’t hold back my excitement as the boss walked in. Our biggest editor Mr. Hans McDermit was in his usual gray suit with buttons just bulging slightly around the his slightly to large middle. He was a big man and his charismatic way filled the room with energy as we all waited anxiously for his next big idea. What happened next, I never saw coming.

You!”

Me?” I said pointing to myself looking around at the two beautiful blondes towering over me.

Yes you, what's your name?”

Of course he did
n't know my name. Only been here four years, “Eve sir. Eve Mallory.”

He nodded
as if considering something, “Of course it is. Mallory you have just the look I'm going for. Want your big break kid?”

My big break?
As if writing human interest pieces wasn't what I went to college for... “Ummm I guess.”

You want it or not?”

I could
feel all the eyes of the entire conference room, probably forty people or more, staring at me. “Yes sir,” I said with confidence.

Good. I have this idea, with Valentine's Day quickly approaching we need to hop on this 50 Shades of Grey idea. I want you to get into that Red place.”

People began to
whisper around me nervously, and a guy who I'd never seen before spit his coffee out on the conference table. There was no way this was happening.

Excuse me sir... But you don't mean that sex club downtown, do you?” He had to be joking.

He laughed
resting his hands on his oversized stomach. Thank God he was kidding.

That's the one. I think they're called swingers’ clubs now. You should see your face, I guess I need to choose someone else.”

And just like that I was going to let another opportunity slip through my clutches. Like hell.

He started looking around the room surveying other young writers. I took a deep breath before delivering my acceptance. “Excuse me, sir? Actually I would like the piece.”

Oh you would, would you? Interesting. Well since I offered it to you first, it's yours. Now go figure out how to get in while I man the rest of this boring meeting.”

I
held my head high with confidence as I strut out of the room not acknowledging that every eye was on me.

As soon as I closed the door behind me I turned and ran right into Max
, one of the premier social life editors. Max was that perfectly metrosexual type of guy, with a light pink shirt on and gray tie, he looked fashionable like always. And although I appreciated his good wardrobe I'd always imagined what could be underneath. He had a bit of a stocky build with muscular arms and thick chest. But what I liked most about him was his dark green eyes that stood out beautifully from his darkly tanned skin. I was feeling like jelly from my overexertion of confidence in the meeting and I dropped my notebook and iPhone on the floor.

Oh I'm sorry,” he said bending down to retrieve my items.

I push
ed my glasses up onto my nose, “Totally not your fault. I was just…” Do I tell him that I was just given a job to write about the hottest sex club in town? No way! He would know that the only reason I took it because I hadn't been published in ages. Which would make me appear totally useless.

As he passed
back my notebook and phone he said, “You were just... what?” He looked behind me. “Did you get a new assignment? I saw that the big guy’s in there today. Obviously I avoided it like the plague.”

I smiled,
“Smart man. Unfortunately I’m glutton for punishment and go in every time he's here. But yeah I actually did get something this time.”

Oh?” His eyebrows raised further about his eyes, “Anything good?”

Uhhh, not really. But it’s something that will pay the bills.” Why was I telling him this much about me? Shut up now.

He nodded,
“Yeah that's good. Well I have a lunch appointment with the new casting director of Rent. See you around Eve.”

I was taken aback that he knew my name. I stood in shock for a moment before ra
ising a hand to his already turned back, “Yeah, see ya.”

I turned on my heel and walked in the opposite direction. I was writing about a sex club and he was meeting with the casting director from Rent. What had my life come to? What type of writer was I becoming? And what the hell was I going to wear to this thing?

That
night at my apartment Nadia found me sitting on a pile of black clothes.

Funeral?” She asked sitting down on my queen size bed.

Of my writing career,” I said with a sigh. “What the hell was I thinking taking this on? I've only slept with like three guys! And somehow I thought that I would understand a sex club?”

She cringed,
“Nobody said you would understand it, just write about it. Play the part. Be a character. You've got to have something in your closet that's not black.”

I just shrugged and then lifted up a black bl
azer, “Maybe I can be like the black widow or something.”

She shook her head,
“Why don't you use the hot librarian thing you've got going on?” She crossed my bedroom in three strides picking up a black skirt on the way. It was lying just outside of the pile I was sitting on. “Here wear this and roll it up twice.”

Roll it up?”

She rolled her eyes,
“Yes roll it up, you’ve got great legs, show them off.”

She had a point
. If I had any assets in the physical category it was definitely my legs. “All right but what should I wear on top?”

She made her way over to what was left of my closet and looked through my strict business shirts before pulling one out with red and black stripes.
“This.”

I put on the
outfit and stood in front of the mirror while she handed me a pair of black pumps. She whistled, “Hot mama! You'll knock 'em dead in this!”

I sure hope so, if my career is going down the drain I might as well look good doing it.”

See? That's the right attitude. Now go get 'em tiger!” She slapped me on the ass just like an athletic coach. As least I think so, I’ve never played a sport.

I took a cab, thinking I would have to drink heavily to get my story. When I arrived outside the club I could already hear the thumping of the music inside, or maybe that was my heart? Stepping out of the cab, I walked over to the line already formed around the building. I took a look over the huge old plastics factory that had been turned into a club, but as I continued to walk I shifted my eyes to the ground as it was clear to me that I was completely underdressed. A woman in front of me had a mini skirt on that allowed me ample access to the tops of her thighs. I could almost see her butt cheeks when the line started to move.

Quickly, too quickly, people went inside but as I approached the bouncer checking IDs I realized he was just letting people in. It was then tha
t I realized this was a members-only type deal. Smart. I tried to follow closely behind metallic mini skirt girl but the huge man in the black muscle shirt put out his arm and stopped me. I raised my eyes slowly to meet his. His bald head was at my eye level since he was sitting on a stool, but he still looked dangerous.

I pushed my glasses further up my nose hoping to hide
the sweat beading between my eyes.

Hi, I uhhh, I would like to get in.” I tried to sound strong but it sounded more like a question than a statement. My confidence was wavering, I didn’t know if he would even give me access.

The bouncer crossed his arms and leaned back on his stool smiling devilishly at me.
“Can’t get in without password sweetheart. You got a password?”

Password?
No one had ever said anything about having a password. I was just supposed to get in, take a few notes on my phone, and get out. I was only here for a story, how was I supposed to know the inner workings of sex club?

Ummm I guess I forgot it.”

No password, no entry. That’s the rules.”

My shoulders hung in defeat when a beautiful blonde approached us dress
ed in what I wouldn’t even consider close to be appropriate in public. But somehow instead of being embarrassed by her outfit I was intrigued. She was slender with long tan legs and a short pixie cut. She was the exact opposite of me and secretly everything I desired to be.

Frankie!” She said approaching him with her arms open.  “Darling it’s been far too long.” She kissed him on both cheeks before whispering something into his ear. It must’ve been pretty erotic because I don’t think I would have believed he could blush, but only five seconds with this woman and he was a puppy dog to her bone.

He nodded as she pulled away, and as she did she noticed me for the first time.
“Well who’s this? Fresh meat?”

Who? Me? I mean I’ve never been here before.”
