“Hey there, beautiful,” I heard a gentle, familiar voice whisper next to my ear and then felt fingers brushing over my hair, lovingly.

I was groggy, but I couldn’t remember why. As I fluttered my eyes, struggling to open them, I was bombarded with bright light and a screaming headache. “Where am I?” I whispered.

“You're at the hospital, Emily. It's me, Spencer. I'm here with you,” he said.

“Spencer...? But how? Why are we here? I don't understand,” I cried out, feeling overwhelmed. The last thing I remembered, Bridget and I were at some party and now I was in the
hospital?

“Shh, shh. It's okay, love. It's all going to be okay,” he said with a catch in his throat. Almost like he didn't believe that it would be.

I looked over at him, scared and unsure. Why was he here? I hadn't seen him in over a month. And why was I back in the hospital?

“Spencer, what happened to me? Why can't I remember anything?” I begged, tears filling my eyes.

“Emily, sweetheart. Everything's going to be okay. I'll explain everything but you have to promise me that you'll stay calm, okay?” Spencer insisted as he squeezed my left hand in between both of his as he pressed it to his lips.

“You're really freaking me out, Spencer. Please. Just tell me!” I cried.

“Well, you and Bridget went out to the club last night in LA. Do you remember that?” he asked, worry in his eyes as he waited for my response.

              I nodded yes.

“And you met some guy there at the bar and he got you incredibly wasted—dangerously so. To top it all off, he drugged your drinks and was about to take you away in his car to God knows where, when I found you,” Spencer explained, hanging his head and shaking in anger.

“I was what, Spencer? And how in the world did you find me?” I asked, shocked that he was in LA and able to save me from such a horrific situation. “I mean, I'm thankful, but I'm just confused...”

              “I...tracked you there,” he whispered.

              “What do you mean you
tracked
me there?” I asked in disbelief.

“Through your work phone. It's got GPS enabled so that I can know your whereabouts at all times,” he explained calmly. “Ever since you up and ran away from me, I've been keeping tabs on you. Just to be sure you were safe. I couldn't bear it if anything were to happen to you, Emily Anne Prescott,” he said with tears in his eyes. “I have to make sure you’re safe.”

I sat there in silence, staring at him. I didn't know what to say.
I mean, who does that?
I thought to myself.
Who tracks someone with GPS at all times?
As much as I wanted to scream at Spencer for invading my privacy, I couldn't deny the fact that it was because of him that I was here right now. Safe and out of harm's way (no thanks to Bridget, apparently). After all, if he hadn't come to my rescue I very well may have been chopped to bits by now. I shivered at the thought.

“I'm sorry for not having boundaries when it comes to you, but I just can't. You mean the world to me and I just can't leave you alone,” he confessed. “Emily...I love you. And when I saw all that blood, I just...I thought I had lost you,” he sobbed.

Blood? Why was I bleeding?
But then my brain caught up to the other words he'd just said and my heart skipped a beat. As much as I wanted to be angry with him and keep my distance, I knew that I couldn't. It wasn't possible because I loved him, too. Tears streamed down my face and I sobbed, “I love you, too. I always have. And I'm sorry, too.”

“Emily, what are you sorry for? You don't have anything to be sorry about. I completely understand. You were emotional and confused and you probably didn't think I would understand,” he explained.

“What are you talking about?” I asked, confused by what he was saying. Surely he didn't know about the whole Calvin situation. He couldn't. There was no way Calvin would disclose that information.

A look of terror flashed across his face and he became ghostly pale. “Emily...are you telling me you didn't know?” Spencer said in disbelief.

“Know what?” I asked, exasperated. “Just tell me.”

“Emily...you were pregnant,” Spencer breathed as a tear fell down his cheek.

I gasped at what he'd just told me. There was no way this was true. “Wait...what do you mean,
were
? Why are you talking about it in the past tense?” I asked as an anxious feeling overcame me.

“Emily, I'm sorry, but...you've had a miscarriage,” Spencer whispered. “We lost the baby,” he explained gently as he hung his head in grief. “I brought you back home with me to sleep off the effects of the alcohol and drugs, but when I came to check on you this morning, you were...” he trailed off, not wanting to say the rest. “You were in a pool of blood,” he choked. “I had no idea that you were pregnant.”

A noise came from me, then, but it was far from human. I was sobbing and heaving—heartbroken for the baby that I would never know. That I never even knew was inside of me. Tears slipped down my cheeks, soaking my hospital gown. It was then that I looked to my right and saw the blood soaked linens in a pile on one of the chairs next to the hospital bed.

I looked back at Spencer in horror and he just nodded, to confirm what I had already suspected: that was
my
blood. Those were
his
sheets.
NO, no no no no.

Spencer pulled me close and hugged me to him as he gently ran his strong hands up and down my back at an attempt to soothe me. “I’m just so happy you’re safe. I thought I’d lost you,” he said, both of us fighting back our tears. “Shh. It's going to be okay, Emily. I promise,” he whispered in my ear. “And who knows, maybe one day in the future we can try for another,” he said, his words filled with hope.

I felt sick then. I knew he was just trying to be helpful, but everything was happening so fast and I couldn't keep doing this. Not anymore. I needed to tell Spencer everything. He deserved at least that much—after all, he had saved my life—
twice
. And if I was being honest I didn't feel like I deserved to be saved and I sure as heck wasn't worthy of Spencer Ford's unconditional love.

I pulled away from him, then and looked into his eyes. I hoped that he wouldn't hate me for what I was about to say, but I had to get it out. There was no turning back now.

“Spencer, there's something I need to tell you,” I said, swallowing the lump in my throat. And before I could talk myself out of it, I whispered, “I slept with someone else.”

A look of hurt flashed across his face and I could see tears glistening in his eyes, but he simply said, “Emily, it's okay. I can't hold the things you did while we were apart against you. I understand.”

I sighed. “No, Spencer. We weren't apart.”

He looked confused by my words, as if he didn't want to believe what I was saying.

“Five weeks ago, on the same day that I first had sex with you…I…I was raped,” I swallowed back the tears that were welling up and bit my lip to keep from crying.

“Spencer…I think the baby may have been your brother's.”
