“I like cherry tomatoes,” he said, curling his finger and thumb to make a circle. “The little ones.”
“I can grow those,” she said. “A whole bunch of them.”
The boy smiled. “Tomatoes
and
a dog?”
She tipped her head toward Cheveyo. “That’s what the man said.”
“A big dog? I like big ones.”
She laughed. “Little tomatoes and big dogs, huh? I think we can manage that.”
But his eyes were on Cheveyo.
And a dad. You’ll have a dad.
Cheveyo let out a soft sigh. “God, I’ve missed you, kid.” In those words, she heard such emotion, and saw the way he strained to hold himself back from hugging his son.
Cody took a tentative step forward, and then fell against Cheveyo. He put his arms around the boy and pulled him close, his eyes squeezed shut. Cody’s eyes were, too. Her heart filled with the sight of them, with what her life would be like now. She was already thinking about taking him shopping to decorate his room. She hoped he liked

.
Cody stepped back and turned to his aunt. “Can we go to Dad’s house today?”
“We sure can.” Paula smiled.
Cheveyo stood. “Right now my house is just that: a house. It needs a garden and a dog. But mostly it needs a family, a dad and a mom and a kid.” He glanced at Petra and then looked at Cody. “I think we might be a perfect fit.”
I’m always grateful for the research help that keeps the book real. Special thanks to the following wonderful peeps:
Lacey Slade for her help in Arizona setting details as well as Hopi information. Lacey wrote me a fan letter and offered to help with my books, little knowing that she lived close to the very area where this book was set.
Nancy Grillo, for a little bit of facial research and a lot of wonderful facials over the years.
Thanks to my critique bud, Marty Ambrose, for encouragement, great input, and friendship.
Thanks to Rachael Wolff. Really.
Coming in June 2012 from Avon Books,
the next thrilling paranormal romance from Jaime Rush
DARKNESS BECOMES HER
Since she was a kid, JAIME RUSH devoured books on unexplained mysteries and psychic phenomena. She
knew
she would be published, marry a fabulous guy, and win a Toyota Supra. Missing the romance, relationship drama, and action of her favorite television shows—
X-Files
,
Roswell
, and
Highlander
—she created her own mix in the Offspring series.
Jaime loves to hear from readers (unless they’re deranged or don’t have something nice to say). You can reach her at PO Box 10622, Naples, Florida 34101, or through her website at www.jaimerush.com.
