“Yes, it’s great to see you too, Michael. I didn’t realize you two had gotten married.”

“Oh please!” Rachel cried out, indignantly, “Are you trying to tell me that your mother didn’t tell you? The wedding was in Hawaii at the end of April. We had nearly the entire island of Maui rented out. Everyone was there except you.” She batted her eyes and stuck out her bottom lip. Lucy thought she looked an awful lot like a woman who was flirting despite standing next to her new husband.

“Maybe Mother mentioned it,” Jamie was saying. “I would have been in the midst of administering mid-terms at that time, so I wouldn’t have been able to make it….”

“Oh my God, are you still teaching?” Rachel rolled her eyes and shook her head. “When are you going to get over your ‘I feel guilty for being rich so I want to save the world’ complex?”

“I didn’t teach because I felt guilty but because I loved it,” he said, looking slightly annoyed.

Michael suppressed a smile, but Rachel once again rolled her eyes before turning to Lucy. As if only just noticing her, she held out her hand and said, “Congratulations on landing a Whitcomb.”

Lucy looked her up and down, leaving the other woman’s hand extended and untouched. Finally she reached out and took the hand and gave it a small squeeze. She saw Rachel staring at the engagement ring on her finger as she did.

“Even better than landing just a Whitcomb, I landed Jamie. That’s cause for congratulations, indeed,” Lucy said.

Jamie coughed and suppressed a smile.

Rachel smiled tightly, gave Lucy a once-over, then turned back to Jamie and said, “You really should have her put that ring in the safe if you’re going to be peddling around town.”

Abruptly, Lucy pushed back from the table and looked at Jamie. “I’m going to use the ladies room.”

As she walked away she heard Rachel say, “Is she always that rude? Really, Jamie couldn’t you have found a woman with a little more class?”

She didn’t stick around long enough to hear what Jamie said in response. She spent several minutes pacing in the bathroom and calming herself down. She’d had a great day with Jamie. She didn’t want to spoil it by getting into a cat fight with a snooty bitch who clearly wasn’t even a good friend of his.

When Lucy finally walked back onto the patio, Rachel and Michael were gone. Jamie stood and immediately said, “I’m sorry. God, I never realized what a bitch Rachel could be.”

Lucy couldn’t help it. She burst out laughing.

“What?” Jamie warily asked.

“I think that’s the first time I’ve ever heard you call someone a bad name.”

He shook his head. “Nope. Remember I called cousin Gretchen’s husband a dickhead?”

Lucy thought about it and said, “You’re right. You did.”

“I call ’em like I see ’em, sweet thing. And I wouldn’t have blamed you for ripping Rachel a new one. In fact, I would have enjoyed seeing it. I settled for telling her you had more class than she could ever dream of having.”

She grabbed his head and jerked him down so she could plant a passionate kiss on him. By the time she broke the kiss, they were both breathing heavy and he was rubbing her lower back, clearly wanting to rub her other places but trying to exercise some restraint in public.

“Want me to call someone else a bitch? Because if that’s what I get as my reward…”

Lucy laughed and pulled his head down for another kiss.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The next day, Lucy felt half sad and half elated to be leaving the island. She hadn’t expected to have such a great time. She’d expected everyone to be rich and snobby and the entire weekend to be unbearable. What she had found instead was that Jamie’s family was warm and welcoming. His parents hadn’t looked at her like she was beneath them. His sister reminded her a lot of herself—she could be sweet and funny one minute, and loud and brutally honest the next. She was also adventurous and open-minded. Jamie’s friends were fun and rowdy, and the other guests at the wedding, save a few bad apples, had known how to get down and party.

The best part of the trip though, hands down, had been spending the day exploring the island with Jamie. He was undeniably gorgeous, but like his sister, he was also smart and funny and kind and adventurous. God, she could write copy on the benefits of being with a man like Jamie.

For most women, his money would be a huge benefit.

More and more, she was beginning to wonder if she was a fool for letting such a thing stand between them.

She sat down on the bed next to her half-packed suitcase and looked down at her heavy engagement ring. Then she looked up at her reflection in the mirror and couldn’t deny it. It was there in her eyes: that wistful longing to belong to a man who loved her enough to swear eternal fidelity to her in front of his family and friends.

It shocked her. Except for when she’d been a child and played dress-up with Gail, she’d never thought marriage was a requirement for happiness.

She gave herself a “stop being silly” look and returned to her packing. It was easier to tell herself to “suck it up and get over it” when she wasn’t looking into her own eyes. Playtime was over and soon she’d be back in northern California and Jamie would be back in Los Angeles.

Someone knocked on the door. When she pulled it open, the object of her angst stood there, looking as handsome as ever. He’d left an hour before to make sure all the wedding guests headed out okay.

“I forgot my key,” he said. Walking over to the dresser, he picked it up. “Are you almost ready?”

“Just about,” she told him. She turned and started back toward her suitcase when suddenly he grabbed her from behind. Wrapping his arms around her waist, he pulled her back into him and kissed the side of her neck.

“Mm,” she sighed. “If you want me to hurry and finish getting ready, you’re going to have to stop doing that.”

“Then you’re going to have to stop being so irresistible,” he told her, moving his lips over to the other side of her neck. She leaned further into him, allowing him easier access. She also felt his hands moving upward toward her breasts as he kissed her.

“Well, being irresistible is my curse. I’ve tried to change that, but I can’t.”

When he nipped her ear, presumably in retaliation for her sassiness, she groaned. He arched his hips into her bottom, telling her without words that she wasn’t helping matters any if her goal was to get him to let her go.

The truth was, she didn’t want him to stop but… “I’m serious. If those hands go any higher we’re going to need at least another thirty minutes.”

His hands continued their upward journey, and when they reached their targets, he gave them a tight little squeeze. Then he groaned and rocked his erection even more urgently against the small of her back.

“Half an hour?” he said. “I could do it—do
you
—in fifteen minutes in a pinch…”

Lucy laughed. “Quit talking and do it, then. The clock is ticking.”

Jamie unzipped her dress then pushed it forward so it fell off her arms and onto the floor. While she was still facing away from him, he unhooked her bra and let it fall to the floor as well. He squeezed her breasts again, using his thumb and forefinger to roll and tweak her nipples. Then, even as he continued his manipulation of her left nipple, his right hand traveled south and dipped into the front of her panties. He shuddered. “Fuck, I love how wet you get for me.”

He rubbed her clit in a small circular motion and she pushed back harder against him.

“I wish we had more time,” he whispered.

Lucy had to laugh again. They had made love twice the night before and again first thing this morning. He was acting like he was starving for it.

He took his hand out of her panties and spun her around. “What’s so funny?”

“You,” she said, becoming more and more breathless as his hands explored her. “And you called me insatiable.”

“Only when you’re around,” he said.

In spite of herself, she loved hearing it.

“The clock is still ticking, and you’re still dressed,” she told him.

“I know,” he said. “I need you to step away so that I can use my hands for something besides touching you.”

Lucy stepped forward and even then had to pull away from his clinging hands. As soon as they separated, he began shucking his clothes while she peeled off her panties and was left standing in front of him wearing only her sandals.

“No one should look that good,” he said as he fumbled with his shirt.

Lucy ran her tongue across her lips and then slowly cupped each of her breasts, giving them a tight squeeze. Then she ran the palms of her hands across both breasts before traveling down further, taking her time, making herself moan when she reached her flat belly. She drew her fingers in little circles just at the top of her mound.

Jamie was sweating and having trouble getting his pants unbuttoned.

Lucy stepped toward him, so close that her taut nipples brushed softly against his chest.

“Would you like some help?” she asked in a sexy whisper.

“Oh God, yes,” Jamie said in a desperate voice. Lucy smiled and took the clasp out of his hands. She had his pants unzipped in seconds. She hooked the waistband of his pants and underwear and then did a squat, pushing them both to the floor so he could step out of them. On her way back up, she let her tongue slide across the head of his cock, making him groan. When she made it back up to his face, she kissed his lips and said, “We’ll revisit that when we have more time.”

Jamie grabbed a condom from his wallet, then pulled her close even as he dropped down into the big chair behind him. Lucy grinned and climbed up, spreading her legs wide so that she was straddling him. She sat there for a few seconds, just staring at his masculine beauty. She touched her lips to his, grabbed the condom from him, slipped it on, then slid herself up until she was a few inches above his erection. She wrapped her fingers around his steely length before impaling herself on it, taking him all the way inside her.

“God, your pussy feels like wet velvet,” he groaned. “Good thing we’re in a hurry, because I don’t think I can last long.”

She arched her back and used her legs to push up off the floor every so often, instigating a rhythm that was fast and wild.

Jamie bent slightly forward and licked her nipples teasingly.

“Oh God, yes. Suck them, Jamie. Take one in your mouth.”

Jamie sucked her nipple into his mouth and worked the nipple with his tongue.

She cradled his head in her arms and twirled his hair around her fingers, loving the sweet, magic feel of his cock sliding in and out of her.

Jamie stiffened. He brought his mouth up to her lips but before covering her mouth with his he said, “I’m going to come baby. Come with me.”

“Rub my clit,” she pushed out between ragged breaths. Jamie slid his hand down between her thighs and used his thumb to massage her clit as he increased the rhythm of his thrusts.

“Oh yes! Oh God, Jamie! Yes!”

Lucy was yelling now, barreling toward her orgasm with desperation. Jamie’s quickening breath echoed her cries of pleasure and they continued to move together, both of them trembling, on the verge of ecstasy. Lucy planted her feet on the chair to shift their rhythm so that she was the one in control, rocking her hips swiftly back and forth, riding him. His hands on her hips pushed her faster until he shouted. Jamie’s bursts of release inside her sent Lucy careening over the edge of pleasure as well.

After a few seconds of silently trembling against each other, Jamie whispered, “Hands down, the best quickie I’ve ever had.”

* * *

Lucy laughed that hearty, bawdy laugh that Jamie loved so much. It was hard for him to believe, but even after nearly catching the chair on fire with their passion, her laugh made his cock twitch again. God, he was crazy about her. Not for the first time, he wondered how the fuck he was going to be able to let her go.

Lucky for his sanity, a knock on the door interrupted his thoughts.

Lucy pulled her head up and looked at the clock. “Uh oh!” she said. “I think we used up our allotted time.”

The knock came again.

“Yes?” Jamie called.

“Hi, Mr. Whitcomb, it’s Henry the bellman. I came to collect yours and Miss Conrad’s bags.”

“Henry, can you leave the cart so I can see to that myself, please?”

“Of course, sir,” Henry said through the door.

Giggling like a schoolgirl caught in the act, Lucy climbed off Jamie’s lap, and grabbed her dress and panties off the floor. “The suitcase is packed. It just needs to be zipped closed,” she whispered to him on her way into the bathroom.

It took closer to four minutes for both of them to get dressed. Jamie loaded their bags onto the cart. He found an envelope in the desk, put a few hundred dollars in it, and wrote Henry’s name on it. Lucy spied the envelope in his hands and asked, “What’s that?”

“A tip for Henry,” he said.

“You had to put it in an envelope?”

He shrugged. “One of the other staff members told me Henry’s wife just lost her job and they have six kids. It’s not much, but…”
