Prologue

Rebecca giggled as she blew out the candle on the huge chocolate cake.  She clapped her hands as Catherine cut her a slice.  She smiled as she watched Patrick scoop up a bite and opened her mouth wide to accept the spoon.  The cake melted in her mouth, the icing smooth and creamy against her tongue.  Patrick laughed at the obvious pleasure she took in the simple act of enjoying her birthday cake.  He bent forward and gently wiped icing from the corner of her mouth.  She smiled up at him, love and happiness written across her face.  Catherine placed a bottle of milk on the table.  Patrick fed Rebecca another bite of cake and then pressed the bottle against her lips.  Her face showed her displeasure and she turned her head away.  Patrick bent closer,

“It may be your birthday little one, but don’t for a moment think you can be naughty.  I will not hesitate to redden your bottom and trust me, it will not be a gentle birthday spanking.”  Rebecca squirmed on the hard seat of her high chair; his words reminding her of the intense spanking she had received the evening before.  Her bottom still throbbed and experience had taught her that he would never hesitate to add another layer of welts to any that might already be decorating her tender bottom.  Rebecca opened her mouth and accepted the large nipple of the bottle.  Patrick smiled, “That’s my good girl.  I love watching you suckle little one.”

Her heart pounded and her tummy tightened at the look in his eyes.  She blushed hotly, embarrassed that her nanny had heard his words. Patrick smiled as he sat back, loving his little one’s expressive face.   Rebecca was suddenly extremely conscious of how she must look every time she pulled on the bottle but even that didn’t stop the tingle that immediately began between her legs.   Rebecca found her mind going back exactly one year.  The day she turned eighteen and wed this man who was to become not only her husband but her Papa as well.

CHAPTER 1

Rebecca’s hand was shaking as she lifted it to knock on the heavy oak door.  She took several deep breaths and then forced herself to rap her knuckles against the wood.

“Come in.”  She opened the door and stepped into the interior.  She had only been allowed in the room and it had not been a pleasant experience.  She held no hope that today’s summons would prove different.  It took her a few moments for her eyes to adjust to the dimness, the two lamps providing little light.  What she saw did nothing to assuage her feelings of apprehension.  Miss Lambert was standing at one side of a large desk, her face giving no clue as to why the young woman had been summoned.  Rebecca’s eyes moved to the man seated at the large desk.  He was reading from some papers and didn’t look up.  Rebecca’s feet seemed frozen to the floor, one hand still holding to the doorknob.

“Close the door and present yourself properly, Rebecca,” Miss Lambert finally said, her tone showing her disapproval.  Rebecca turned to close the door and after taking a deep breath, she forced herself to walk forward.  She stopped a few feet from the desk and stood with her hands at her sides, her eyes looking down at her feet.  She was extremely nervous and didn’t realize that her hands were fisted in the fabric of her dress, twisting and worrying the cloth.

“Stop fidgeting!  Stand up straight girl, hands at your sides, eyes forward!”  The instructions were snapped out with clear disgust.  “Gracious child, haven’t you learned anything at all in your time here?” Rebecca’s hands released her skirt and she tried unsuccessfully to smooth out the wrinkled fabric.  She felt her face flush in embarrassment as she was reprimanded.  She heard the headmistress sigh loudly and as the woman began to step forward, Rebecca belatedly realized she had been asked a question.

“No… I mean yes… I mean… yes, ma’am.”  Rebecca’s head was bent so far forward and her voice was so soft that the two could barely hear her answer.

“The floor isn’t talking to you!  Look at me when I am talking to you or do I need to give you a private lesson?”

Trembling with the threat that those words implied, Rebecca forced herself to look up and meet the eyes of the older woman.  She gulped audibly, her hands once again wrapped in the folds of her dress.  “I’m… I’m sorry ma’am.  I… I do try to pay attention to my teachers.”

Miss Lambert shook her head and would have immediately stepped forward to more physically chastise the young woman but for the lifted hand of the man.  She stopped and stepped back again, her fingers itching to reach into the large pockets of her apron to fetch one of her many implements of correction.  Instead, she too breathed deeply and remained silent.  Rebecca lowered her eyes again, her lower lip caught between her teeth.  She had seen the headmistress’s hand beginning its journey and was terrified of what might appear from that horrid pocket.  Her knuckles ached with the reminders of a ruler being applied to them for her supposed disobedience.  The silence hung heavy in the room until the man finally spoke.

“Your file tells quite a different story Rebecca. Your teachers have reported quite thoroughly on your lack of progress and I must say I am extremely disappointed.  You’ve been with us for almost six months and yet you remain stubborn and disobedient.”

Rebecca felt her face flush both in fear as well as anger.  She had been placed in the school totally against her will.  Her parents deaths earlier in the year and made her an orphan.  Her only remaining relative had been an older uncle whom she didn’t even remember until he stepped forward as her new guardian.  He didn’t particularly care that the school he chose had a shaky reputation.  He meant to keep as much of Rebecca’s parent’s money to himself as possible.  There was no need in his mind to spend more than absolutely necessary to fund his niece’s schooling and care.   Rebecca had begged him to allow her to remain in his home, begged not to be sent to a school where she knew no one.  He had been adamant.  He had no desire to spend any of his time on raising his sister’s child.  He’d counted himself fortunate that his orphaned niece had come with enough resources to tuck her away, and he had done so almost immediately upon her arrival in his home.

Rebecca still felt the sudden loss of her parents deeply.  She had been a very sheltered only child and was a very small and extremely shy young woman.  Without her parents’ love she became even more withdrawn.  She had been rejected by her only living relative and felt alone and abandoned since her arrival.   She shuffled her feet as she grew even more uncomfortable.

The man watched her and smiled.  The poor girl was obviously trying to keep silent though her body language indicated she wanted desperately to deny his words.  He continued.  “Miss Matthews, I sent for you to inform you of your uncle’s recent death.”

Rebecca’s head came up, her eyes wide.  Death?  Uncle Albert had died?  She was shocked at the callous way the news had been given, almost as if it was news about the weather.  Her eyes filled with tears.  Not for the man she had barely known and who had made sure she knew he didn’t care for her, but for the fact that she was now truly alone in the world.

The man watched her and could practically read her mind.  “Come now girl, no need for such a display.  We both know you were nothing but a burden to your uncle.”

Rebecca felt shame flow through her.  She was mortified that though what he spoke was the truth, it was cruel to verbalize.  She couldn’t help herself.  “You have no right to…to be so…so rude to me!”  She immediately realized her mistake.  Proper, obedient young women did not speak before they were spoken to and definitely did not raise their voices or dare to chastise any adult.  Her face flushed hotly as she stammered.  “I’m so... sorry sir.  Mr. Danvers, please forgive me… I wasn’t thinking.”  She watched as he stared at her, his eyes seeming to bore through her.

“You are a very spoiled young woman.  Your father did you no favors by coddling you and obviously ignoring the discipline you so desperately need.  No wonder your uncle was so quick to dispose of you.  No one wants to deal with such a badly behaved child and, as you just proved, an even ruder young woman.  You have spent almost eighteen years thinking that you are a little princess.  Well, young lady, you will learn the hard way that orphans such as yourself do not live in castles with servants attending to their every whim.”
