S NOTE

Private Eddie Slovik was executed for the crime of desertion on January 31, 1945. He lay buried in France alongside convicted rapists and murderers in a grave marked only by a number until 1987, when his body was moved to his hometown of Detroit. Eddie Slovik's story was uncovered and told by the journalist and author William Bradford Huie in an excellent book,
The Execution of Private Slovik.
