Chapter 8

The sun shines in Megan’s eyes as she wakes, her naked body pressed against cool, silk sheets. She rolls over, stretching as she turns and watches Peter’s back as he pulls his shirt up over it.

“Good morning.” He whispers, turning his head slightly to look at her as he buttons up his shirt. “I hope you slept well.”

“Mhm.” She whispers laying her head back down on the pillow.

She watches him slowly walk around to her side of the bed and he holds his hand out for her to grab, helping her sit up.

Megan accepts his hand, and he lifts her up to sit. She brings the sheet up over herself, covering her bare chest as Peter leans down to her, pressing his lips against hers.

“What time is it?” She asks, still a little bit sleepily. “I should probably be at work right now.”

“Just past ten.” He whispers into her neck.

“Are you serious?” She asks, pushing him away and leaning over the side of the bed to pick up her discarded clothes. “I have to go. I already left work yesterday without saying anything to anyone, and now I’m late today….” She pauses as she slips her arms through the sleeves of her blouse. “I’m going to get fired.”

“Fired?” He says, lifting his eyebrows. “Fired for what? You’re with the CEO, who’s going to fire you?”

“It’s a responsibility, Peter, I have to go.” She says huffing as she drops her shoulders in frustration.

“Just…. Let yourself be fired then.” He says, reaching down to pick up her skirt before handing it to her.

“What?” She asks as she slips her feet through the waist and pulls it up her calves. “We’re not all billionaires here, Peter, I can’t just not go into work and still expect to pay my rent, you know.”

“I’ll pay your rent.” He says, watching her with his blue eyes as she stands to pull her skirt up her thighs and over her round bottom.

“Yeah, sure.” She snorts, sitting back down on the bed beside him.

“Yeah.” He whispers, leaning into her and wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her in close. “Let me. I have the money, and we can settle down. Megan, I have an appointment to make an offer on a new house later this afternoon. Just out of town. Lots of bedrooms.” He says, dragging the palm of his hand up and down her waist. “You can come with me if you want.”

“No.” She says abruptly, pushing away his arms as she stands up. She turns to him, wiping the sleep out of her eyes as she shakes her head. “No, Peter, what are you thinking? I have to get to work now.”

“What?” Peter asks, his blue eyes squinting at her. “Should I put off the offer on the house until another time?”

“Why do I care, it’s your house?” She asks, sighing.

He pauses, turning his head to look at the sunshine out of the balcony window before scratching at his stubble softly.

“So, are we anything?” He asks, sighing softly and turning towards her.

“Peter.” She whispers, sitting back down beside him. “Peter, we just reconnected. I mean, we had fun, but it’s just too soon to know anything.”

He clears his throat, nodding softly as he stands.

“Alright.” He says, walking back over to his side of the bed, before picking his keys up from the bedside table. “I’ll take you back to work.”

Chapter 9

She rubs her eyes as her heels click against the floor as she makes her way down the corridor to her desk. She sighs as she spots Benj on the phones. She knew this would happen.

Quietly she walks up to her desk, giving him a soft apologetic smile and a little wave. He throws his hand up in the air before bringing it back down to cover the receiver as he mouths “Where were you?”.

“I’m so sorry, things just got a little bit out of hand.” She says as Benj hangs up the phone. “I’m here now though, so…”

He stands, brushing the front of his jacket as he pushes the chair in her direction, letting her sit down.

“Oh yeah?” He says, squinting at her. “You don’t say.”

“Yeah, turns out we did know each other.” She says, clearing her throat. “And one thing led to another and…”

“And it ended in you fucking the CEO?” He says coldly.

“What?” She asks, taken back.

“You’re wearing the same clothes as yesterday, Megan.” He says, looking her up and down.

“Ahhh, yeah.” She says, looking down at her blouse and cardigan before wiping her fingers over her eyes.

“You know, Megan, I don’t care really care about what…. Or who…” He says, pausing. “You’re doing. But you left me in a downright shitty situation having to cover for you so no one noticed they weren’t getting their messages. Kind of unprofessional.”

“I’m sorry, I really am.” She apologizes.

“Yeah.” He says, nodding his head slightly. “I didn’t become an accountant to do a secretaries job, you know.”

“It… it was a one off.” She says, feeling the sting of his words. “I won’t let it happen again, I promise, Benj.”

“Megan.” He says, sighing. “You’re my friend, of course I’ll cover for you, but I just want to look out for you, and people are going to get a little pissed off if they find out that you’re getting special privileges because you’re sleeping with the man upstairs.”

She takes a deep breath as she looks up at her friend before turning her chair into her desk.

“You know what?” She says, picking up the phone receiver and placing against her ear as she dials in her passcode to check any leftover voice mails. “Thank you for covering for me, but mind your own business.”

Chapter 10

Two weeks. It’s been two weeks since her night with Peter and things definitely haven’t gotten back to normal.

She sighs as she sits in the bathroom stall holding the little cardboard box in one hand as she tries to take off the cap of the little white stick with the other.

Flowers have arrived at her desk nearly every day. Chocolates every second. She appreciates the gestures but she’s kept her distance since. The last thing she needs is her job in jeopardy because her CEO is a good lay.

Megan takes a deep breath as she looks up at the ceiling waiting for the test to develop. She likes Peter, she really does. She’s never had a man pay so much attention to her before. Everything about his obsession for her is so genuine and gives her goose bumps just thinking about it.

She clears her throat before looking down at the white stick before noticing two thin, blue lines.

“Oh, are you fucking kidding me?” She whispers to herself as she tosses the test in the waste disposal basket hanging on the wall.

“Excuse me.” She says as she walks past a woman washing her hands at the sinks before she pushes open the ladies bathroom door forcefully.

She cracks her knuckles nervously as she walks back to her desk before pushing her chair out of the way and grabbing the receiver of her phone. She quickly keys in the extension to the 23
rd
floor, tapping her foot as it rings.

“Office of Peter Mark, how can I help you?” She hears on the other line.

“I need to talk to Peter, this is Megan Kane.” She says, sitting down in her chair.

“He’s in a meeting right now, I can take a message.”

“No.” She says, her voice raising. “You get him out of that meeting and on the phone right now, this is an emergency.”

“He will get back to you right after he’s done.”

“I’m coming up to see him.” She says, standing back up.

“You’ll have to make an appointment, Megan.”

“I’m coming up right now.” She says before slamming down the phone on Peter’s assistant.

Chapter 11

Megan sits on the plush leather couch in Peter’s office, on the same sofa as where they first made love those few weeks ago, with her head in her hands.

“This cannot be happening to me.” She whispers to herself as she rubs her knuckles into her eyes.

She sits up straight, her shoulders back as she hears Peter open the door to her office.

“My assistant says you’re very persistent.” He chuckles as he closes the heavy wooden door behind him.

“Well, it’s kind of an emergency.” She says, watching him as he walks by her knees to sit on the couch beside her.

He sighs out deeply as he leans his head on the back of the couch before turning his neck to face her.

“Couldn’t keep away, hey?” He whispers, smiling.

“No.” She says, shaking her head. “I’m pregnant.”

He reaches up, gently stroking over her chin with the pads of his fingers before turning her head to face her with his palm.

“Well, that’s okay.” He whispers to her, a small smile gracing his lips. “That’s good, right?”

“No, Peter, that’s not good.” She says, and angry tear escaping from behind her eyelashes and falling down her cheek.

“No?” He asks, his smile turning into a small, confused frown. “But I thought we were trying for that?”

“Trying for it?” She asks, swatting his hand away from her face. “Peter why would we be trying, we just had sex, we weren’t trying to have a baby!”

“But, I thought you said…” He starts.

“You thought I said?” She asks, shaking her head. “Peter, we were just talking dirty! No one in their right mind would have thought you were serious!”

He sits forward on the couch, resting his elbows on his knees and his face in his palm. He sighs as he rubs over his cheeks before letting himself fall back into the cushions.

“You know I’ll take care of everything.” He says, reaching for her hand.

“I know.” She whispers back to him, letting his fingers wrap around hers.

She leans against him as they sit in silence before Peter clears his throat.

“Let’s get married, then.” He whispers to her, brushing his thumb over the back of her hand. “I love you.”

“Peter.” She says, standing up from the couch and letting go of his hand. “No, Peter, this was a mistake.”

“I’m sorry.” Megan says, not looking at him as she opens the heavy door to his office and steps out, closing it behind her.

Chapter 12

She sits at her desk, slowly sipping her steaming hot coffee as she rolls a blue ball point pen along her desk.

“Megan.” She hears and she looks up, seeing Benj leaning forward on the wall in front of her desk.

“Hey.” She whispers, gently placing her coffee down and giving her friend a soft smile.

“Long time no talk.” He says, wiping his fingers over the granite. “Sorry about that.”

“That’s okay, man.” She says, nodding her head. “I understand.”

He smiles back at her before raising his eyebrows.

“You heard about Mr. Fancy CEO right?” He says, leaning back.

“Yeah, I heard about him.” She says, pursing her lips, feeling a little annoyed about Peter being brought up.

“You heard he’s moving offices, right?” Benj says, nodding his head up and down his eyes wide before he lets out a chuckle. “What did you do to him?”

“What do you mean he’s moving?” She asks, pressing her hand flat against her pen, stopping it from rolling.

“I can’t remember where.” Benj says, looking up at the ceiling. “Some place in Europe.”

“Are you serious?” She asks, standing up from her chair. “He never said anything to me about it.”

“Yeah, we got a memo about it.” Benj says. “With his new number for video chats.” He says as he points at her computer screen. “Must be nice to travel around like that and still hold a job. Fuckin’ guy.”

“Excuse me.” She says, turning away from Benj and running toward the elevator. “I’ll be right back!” She calls out to him, leaving him to answer the phones once again.

She rides the elevator to the 23
rd
floor, impatiently waiting for the light to ding.

“Hurry up!” She says as she waits for the heavy metal doors to open.

She squeezes out of the doors before running toward Peter’s assistant’s desk.

“Where is he?” She asks, panting as she looks toward his office.

“He just left, Megan.” The assistant says, flipping through a day planner. “But the car he’s waiting for is coming at 10. So unless it’s early, he should still be downstairs.”

“I just came from downstairs.” She says, exasperated.

“Must have just missed him.” He says, handing her a folded paper. “But he left you this.”

“Yeah, okay, thanks.” She says, opening the folded paper, revealing a very expensive check.

Call me. Good faith money. More when you want it. Please call, Megan. I love you.

“Oh my God.” She whispers turning around and racing for the elevator.

“Hey, Megan!” The assistant yells out to her. “He loves you, ya know!”

She runs past the cafeteria on her pantyhose, her heels in her hands. Megan pushing against the big glass doors of the entrance to her office before walking out into the parking lot.

She looks around for Peter, her heart racing as she feels the time slip away. Finally she spots him. She runs over to him as he opens the door to a long, black limo.

“Peter!” She yells, slowing down, her legs aching as she watches him turn his head.

His blue eyes light up and he begins to run forward toward her.

“Megan.” He whispers, wrapping his arms around her and burying his face in her hair.

“No. No!” She says, pushing him away. “I don’t want this!” She yells as she waves the check around in the air.

“Take it. It’s okay.” He whispers to her as he grasps her arm, trying to hold it steady.

“I don’t want it!” She says, ripping up the check as tears flow down her face. “How could you just leave without telling me?”

“I don’t want to be her if I can’t have you, Megan.” Peter whispers to her, brushing his fingers against her chin.

“Well, I don’t want your money.” She says, tossing the torn paper at him. She grabs him by the tie and pulls him close. “I want you.”

She pushes her lips against his before wrapping her arms around him, resting her ear on his chest, listening to his heart beat.

“Sir.” A suited driver says from behind them. “I’m sorry, but if we’re going to make it to the airport we need to leave now.”

“No.” Peter whispers to him. “I won’t be going.” He pulls up Megan’s chin, looking into her crystal eyes. “Everything is already right here.”

End.
