When he finished cumming he slid himself out of her. His eyes
returned to the here and now as he pulled out. He lifted her legs and
slid the dildo out of her easily.

“I'm guessing that you've had anal sex before since that
dildo didn't appear to bother you at all and came out easily.”

Andi hadn't been going to tell him that but since he'd guessed she
let him know.

“Yeah, I wasn't going to tell you though since you didn't
ask.”

“My own fault there. I'll be sure to be more inquisitive in
the future. We'll move to the next bigger size tomorrow.”

Andi just grinned at him.

Jake showed a touch of his gentle side as he tucked her in and
bade her good night. He took the dildo and headed out of the room,
flicking the lights off on the way.

“Sleep well Andi, get good rest. I think you probably need
it.”

She was nearly asleep already and her answer came out closer to
grunts than words.

Chapter
7 – Settling In

Andi startled awake in the middle of the night to find Jake
thrashing in his sleep. He had pulled the covers off of her and she
could hear him muttering in a plaintive voice.

“Why, Shelly?”

“Too long, Shelly.”

“Forgive me.”

Andi grabbed the covers and pulled them back over herself. Then
she slid across the bed until her back was flush with Jake's. The
touch of her flesh seemed to calm him and he settled down. She fell
asleep moments later.

Andi woke in the morning to find that Jake was already out of bed.
She stretched luxuriously, a night in a real bed having done wonders
for the stiffness of her muscles. She rotated her head, trying to
relieve the stiffness in her neck, and saw the corner of a photograph
sticking out from under Jake's pillow.

She picked the crumpled photo up, glanced at it, and several
things became clear to her. The picture was of Jake and a woman. As
she looked at the picture she noted the similarities between her own
looks and those of the woman in the photograph. She and the unknown
woman didn't look like twins but they could easily have been mistaken
for sisters.

Andi flipped the photo over to find two inscriptions, in different
handwriting. The first read:

Jake and Michelle
with a
date that was almost three years earlier.

The second read:

Jake:

All my love forever.

Shelly

Suddenly the haunted and wistful looks she'd seen on Jake's face
made a great deal more sense. She thought he might be seeing her as
Shelly when that occurred. Maybe when it happened he was just wishing
that she actually was Shelly instead. She couldn't tell without
asking and she wasn't about to do that. She didn't know if this was a
good thing or a bad thing. If he grew resentful of her due to the
resemblance, she didn't know what might happen. At least she knew
about it now and if a problem arose because of it, she'd have a
better chance to head it off.

Andi slid the photo back under his pillow and got out of bed. She
dressed in her own clothes, despite their ragged condition, and left
the bedroom. She looked in the living room and the kitchen but didn't
find Jake.

She did find a covered bowl atop the wood stove in the kitchen. It
was being kept company by a large metal teapot. The stove was still
radiating a touch of heat when she approached and she figured that
these were left here to stay warm for her. She lifted the lid on the
bowl and found that it was full of oatmeal. Sniffing the spout of the
teapot gave her a strong scent of mint and the faint scent of apples.

A single spoon sat on the table, along with an empty cup, so she
appropriated the bowl and poured herself a cup of whatever was in the
teapot. She sat down and ate the oatmeal, accompanying it with the
tea. They were both still warm from being left on the stove. She ate
all of the oatmeal despite its blandness. She knew that it would fill
her up and, at the moment, that seemed more important than taste. The
tea was a pleasure to drink. After weeks of just water, the mixed
apple and mint flavors of the tea delighted her tongue.

When she finished eating, she resumed her search for Jake. When
she looked outside, she found him watering the garden. It was a
classic American sight 'Man Watering with Hose' and it took her
several moments to realize that the sight was now going to be a
rarity throughout the country.

“Jake” she called.

He turned his head to look at her and smiled, briefly. The smile
quickly fled but he shut off the water and made his way over to her.

“Good morning, I let you sleep in. I figured you'd probably
need it after hearing about your last couple of weeks. I left you
some oatmeal and rosehip-mint tea on the stove for breakfast.”

“Thank you. I feel better this morning than I have in more
than two weeks. I'm still a little stiff but I think moving around is
clearing that up. I saw the food and figured that was why you left it
there. I never knew rose hips smelled and tasted like apples.”

“Well, they do smell like them a lot. They brew up into a
good tea also, lots of vitamin C in it.”

“I never knew that. I can see that I'm going to have a lot
to learn, aren't I?”

“Good, I'm glad you realize that. I was thinking I should
take care of the chores today. There are a couple of books you might
want to read since they describe some of what I do here and why.”

“If that's how you want to do it.”

“Well, if you don't like that idea, feel free to tell me.
The 'no' thing only counts for sex. I'm more than willing to discuss
anything else, although there are some things that absolutely need to
get done on time.”

“I feel guilty leaving you to do all the work.”

“It isn't a problem. Like I said, I designed the place so I
could do it all myself. Right now there isn't even enough to keep me
busy all day long. That'll change in a few more weeks when I get more
planting done but I'll probably finish my chores by early afternoon
today.”

“Okay, where are the books you want me to read?”

“There's a small table downstairs in the library. I put them
on it. While you're in the basement, the boxes along the left hand
wall when you go down are the ones you can look through for clothes.
I figure we can get a lot of stuff taken care of for you today. Then
I'll start splitting the chores between us tomorrow. I'll do most of
them at first but we'll slowly move to a more even split as you
learn.”

“That sounds more than fair to me, less fair to you. But if
that's how you want to do it, it's your call.”

“Good then, I'm going to get back to watering. I'd suggest
you have a few more cups of tea, if you've been eating poorly then
the tea will be good for you. There's a jar of honey in the cupboard
over the sink if you want it sweetened but go light on it, we don't
have a lot of that.”

Jake turned and walked back to where he'd left the hose. Andi
watched as he did so. She was much less confused about the switches
between brusque and kind now. She was pretty sure he was brusque when
he had either been thinking of Shelly or had momentarily mistaken her
for Shelly. He was kind when he was being himself and thinking of her
as Andi and not having his emotions jerked around by his memories.

She went back into the house and opened the basement door Jake
showed her the day before. A flip of a switch and more LED lights
came on down below. She headed down the stairs and found herself in a
small central room. There were three doors leading off the room, one
of them open, and to the left there stood a stack of cardboard boxes.

First things first,
she
thought and headed for the boxes. She opened the first box on top and
found a bunch of old journals. The second box revealed old cosmetics
and hygiene products. The third box she opened held clothing. She
emptied the box and started to look through its contents.

A while later she knew that she could
wear most of Shelly's old clothes. The pants would need the cuffs
rolled up or hemmed and they might need a belt also. Neither of those
were a big deal.

There was an even mix of pants and long
skirts in the boxes she'd checked. The skirts were a touch loose but
that was another easy fix if she could remember her sewing skills.
The underwear were also a touch loose on her but they would stay up,
barely. That was something else easily fixable by a small fold and
seam on either side.

The bras were her biggest worry. She'd
checked the size and they were one cup size smaller than what she
normally wore. When she eventually gave in and tried one on she found
that either those bras were stretched out or her chest was smaller
than she remembered. They were a bit tight but not to the point of
being uncomfortable. When she put her own bra back on she noticed
that she wasn't filling the cups out as much as she once did and that
answered the question. If she lost any more weight at all then
Shelly's old bras might even fit well.

For now she just grabbed an armload of
outer clothing and the two smallest pairs of underwear. She'd work on
the other things later. She'd probably also spend some more time
examining the bras. If one she picked at random was a close fit, some
of the others might work for her now. She knew how much the sizing
between two brands could vary.

Setting her clothing choices aside, she
moved to the one door down here that was open. She'd peeked in before
getting engrossed in the boxes and noticed that it was the library.
She entered the room and found two books lying on the table. The
first thing she noticed was that both listed the author as 'Jacob A.
O'Connell'. She grinned when she noticed that. He was right, reading
books he himself had authored to learn how he did things would
probably work well. The titles of the two books were: 'Easy
Homesteading' and 'Planning for Self-Sufficiency'. She took them with
her as she went back upstairs.

Another cup of tea accompanied her and
the books to the bench in front of the house. Jake was nowhere to be
seen but she was sure he was around somewhere. She settled down on
the bench and sat in the sun for a while, sipping the tea as she
began to read the first book.

An hour or so later Andi saw Jake
coming around the corner of the house. She was sunning on the bench,
curled up like a cat on a windowsill, making her way through the
first book. When she saw him she smiled. If he were truly the author
of this book then her chances for survival by staying with him were
high. The author of the book really knew his stuff.

“Hey there.” she said.

“You look comfortable. Making any
progress on the books?”

“What have you been up to?”

“I've been doing chores. You
know, the ones you're supposed to be learning about in the books?”

“I am. I've been reading these
and it looks like you know your stuff. I went through the clothes
first and have a couple of piles that I can use right away. I wanted
to know if I could grab any of them or if there were some things I
should leave alone.”

“You're welcome to any of it you
can use.”

“That will most likely be all of
it, but I will need a needle and thread to make sure some of it fits
well enough to not fall off of me.”

“That's a tough call; supply you
with sewing stuff, or have the opportunity to watch your clothes fall
off at random moments. Not really that tough though. As entertaining
as it might be to see you nude at random points in the day, I think
that if you can get them to fit better you should do it. Remind me
when we break for lunch and I'll show you where I've got the
supplies. One of the other doors downstairs leads to my supply
closet. I've got everything from hordes of canned goods to sewing
equipment to spare gun parts stored in there.”

“You have guns?” Andi said,
momentarily taken aback.

“Well, yes. Just how else would I
have chosen to take my crossbow instead of a gun when I first met
you?”

“Sorry, I'd kind of blocked that
out. I don't like guns though.”

“Well, would you prefer people
taking away our food and everything else because we couldn't defend
it? I know I'm located in a kind of out of the way spot but sooner or
later someone will find us here. Odds are it'll be that stupid
rooster that gives our location away but there isn't much I can do
about that if we want to keep having chickens and eggs.”

“Sorry, it was a knee-jerk
reaction.”

“That's okay, have you ever even
fired a gun?”

“No.”

“Well, I'll tell you what. After
you finish settling in, I'll take you back to my firing range and let
you fire a couple of different style guns. After you shoot a couple
of times you might not be so dead-set against them. Even if you still
are dead-set against, you
will
learn to use at least the
shotgun. Being able to defend yourself is going to be a very
important skill in the next few years if I'm guessing correctly.”

“I'll try? I can't promise
anything. I've never even held one, just heard about all these people
being killed with them.”

Andi was surprised at the vehemence
that permeated his voice when he spoke.

“Well, try to clear that out of
your mind and form your own opinion. If people had been doing that
right along, forming their own opinions instead of taking other
peoples' word as gospel, we wouldn't be in the situation we're in
right now. And by that we, I mean the whole country, not just you and
I.”

“Feel kind of strongly about
that?”

“You might say so. I'm not going
into details though. Suffice it to say I have reasons.” he
said.

“Anyhow, back to your question.
Yes I am learning stuff out of this book. It's especially useful here
because I can see exactly what you meant and did by comparing the
examples in the book to the things you've set up here. You based the
examples off of things you'd already done here, didn't you?”
