Then he was gone to join the other groomsmen downstairs. I heard the string quartet start in the foyer, and my nerves fluttered again. It was starting. Allison slipped back into the room, nodding at me to indicate that our mother had, in fact, arrived. I smiled around the room where we had stayed the weekend Ryan proposed, knowing without a doubt that this was going to be a perfect wedding.

I felt a sense of peace as Amy started to make her way down the staircase. Next was Emily’s turn, and she grabbed me for one last hug before setting off. Then Allison was handing me my flowers, whispering that she was proud of me. I met her eyes just before she turned to start down the stairs, steady and calm and full of love.

“You ready, sweetheart?” my dad asked, smiling down at me. I couldn’t contain my grin as I nodded back.

I put my arm through his, and he led me to the staircase. As we made our way down, I heard a collective intake of breath, an appreciative murmur. The guests seemed like a blur to me, but I thought I could make out my mother, sitting alone in a back row. She was smiling, but tears were slipping down her cheeks. I smiled at her, hoping they were tears of joy.

Then Chris came into view, standing with the wedding party and the minister in front of the fireplace, and I forgot all about my mother. I forgot about my dad and my sisters and Emily and all of those guests—Chris was the only person in the entire room that mattered. When he saw me, his face broke out into an impossibly huge grin. All I could think about was getting to where he stood, Ryan behind him, beaming, his hand on his best friend’s shoulder as they watched me approach.

As my dad passed my hands to Chris, I felt certainty settle over me. Our life together might not be perfect, but it’d be worth it, no matter what. If I had this man to love, it would
all
be worth it.

“You ready for this?” Chris whispered, the blue eyes I loved so much twinkling in the light from the candles behind us.

I pulled his hands to my lips, kissing the back of each one. “I’ve never been more ready for anything in my life.”
