She shifted her position; she had been sitting in the same one for a long time, and her muscles were protesting. She winced a little as the movement caught the stump of one of the amputated fingers on the rexelene floor, then she became lost in thought again. She couldn’t see what the future held for her, but she did think that perhaps she wouldn’t have to be facing it alone any more.
 

Grace grinned at the empty sky and gasped down some of the mild air deep into her lungs. In this shadowy night light she couldn’t see the blunted fingers, or the marked face, and as she thought about that she felt an unexpected sense of deep liberation. Because she suddenly knew one thing with absolute certainty: the person in her thoughts wouldn’t care if she had four or forty fingers. He would only see the person she was under her skin. Her heart gave an enormous leap of exuberance, leaving her momentarily breathless. That was such a beautiful thought that it made her cry. And it was true. She knew with astounding clarity that he would never, ever let her down.

She sat there until dawn; a rather solitary figure who was trying to make sense of too many things. The sky turned from black to dark blue to a reddish yellow, to broad daylight. At last, as the sun rose over the horizon, she curled up into a tight ball and went peacefully to sleep, her face calm and serene; her dreams finally happy.
