I wondered what would happen to Corporal Caswell. With any luck the war would be over before he’d healed sufficiently to return to duty. He could start a new life anywhere in the world. My father told me that the Lieutenant didn’t want to return to the regiment. There was a new Colonel now, and most of the men he’d served with in India were dead.
Was I happy about the way this had turned out? Justice had been served, honor had been satisfied. Thomas Wade was no longer a hunted man. Still . . .

And Simon because in Wade’s boots, he would have stood fast and fought to clear himself. Sad, isn’t it, that no one was moved to seek justice for the Caswells? Hazel was the only child strong enough to withstand them, and in the end, even she was pushed too far by their greed, when it threatened her happiness. They decided their own fate, and in the end, it will cost Lady Campbell her life.
And, meanwhile, Simon was forced to buy a new pair of driving gloves. His had been entered into evidence.
