She was about 5’5 and curvaceous with beautiful, mocha toned skin, long lashes and a cute short, Halle Berry style haircut.

Her boyfriend Travis was on her heels, clutching something silver in his hand. He was dark skinned with an athletic build. At 6’0, he played the position of shooting guard on the basketball team.

“Trav,” Kamal said as he pounded him up. “What’s up Jordan.”

              “Sup Kamal.”

              “Ain’t shit.”

Travis leaned in and revealed the small flask that he was holding. “You want some Henney my nigga?”

Kamal glanced at me and I rolled my eyes at him. He didn’t need to be getting drunk because I damn sure didn’t feel like driving.

“A’ight man. Let’s go to the restroom and shit,” Kamal agreed. “I’ll be back bae.”

I shook my head and grabbed Jordan’s hand. “Let’s go the restroom. We need to talk.”

“Okay, but I ain’t tryna spend my whole prom night in the restroom,” she complained.

“I got a blunt in my purse,” I whispered in her ear.

That made her nod in approval. Honestly, I wasn’t worried about us getting caught smoking. The chaperones weren’t going to come in the restroom looking for us. Most of the chicks at the school were afraid of me anyway, so I wasn’t concerned about them telling. We would just puff that shit a couple times and then I’d put it out. The thing was, I needed something to take the edge off. What was going on with my pops had my head fucked up.

When we got inside of the restroom another chick we were cool with, who we called Bells, was standing in front of the mirror putting on some lip gloss.

“Bells, what’s good boo?” I asked playfully.

“Hey Sasha. Hey Jordan.” She didn’t bother to look back, but looked at us in the mirror instead.

“Sup Bells,” Jordan said as she walked over to open one of the windows.

“What ya’ll ‘bout to do?” Bells finally turned around.

She was a red bone with thick lips, slanted light brown eyes and long, naturally curly hair. We called her Bells because her real name was Isabelle. Her mother was white and her black father was nowhere to be found.

“Smoke this blunt,” I filled her in as I held it up.

It looked like me and Jordan weren’t going to be able to have that conversation. Bells was alright with me, but I didn’t want her all up in my business. I knew that everybody was talking about what was going on with my dad, but nobody said anything to my face. They knew that I’d knock their damn teeth down their throats.

“Hell yeah. Let me hit it,” Bells smiled.

I looked at her like she was crazy. “You ain’t ‘bout to hit my spliff with all that shit on your lips.”

Jordan laughed as I lit the L and took a deep pull. Bells rolled her eyes and used a paper towel to blot some of the shininess from her lips. I passed the blunt to Jordan next.

“So, ya’ll heard ‘bout Tianna?” Bells had a sly grin on her face as she lowered her voice.

Nobody else was in there, so I didn’t understand why.

“What about her?” I asked wanting her to get to the point.

Some juicy tea about somebody else would get my mind off my own issues.

Jordan passed her the blunt. “I heard she’s pregnant by Tevin.”

“Tevin Jeffries?” I asked stunned. “Ain’t he with that stuck up bitch Shanice? I can’t stand her goody two shoe ass.”

Bells hit the blunt a couple more times and passed it back to me. “Yup and Shanice said she’s gonna whoop her ass tonight. By the way, I love ya’ll dresses. Ya’ll servin’.”

I admired her long, red mermaid dress. The rhinestone embezzlement was subtle and added a nice sparkle to it.

“You too,” I returned the compliment and Jordan agreed.

My dress was short of course, being that I was a shorty at 5’3. It was a soft, pale blue with a low cut corset top and flared out like a tutu. Jordan was rocking a tight, white dress that was cut to show a slight glimpse of her belly button and lower back. Looking at my reflection, my dark brown, almond shaped eyes stared back at me. I loved the glow of my coffee brown skin and the deep dimple in my left cheek. My cheekbones were high like my mother’s and my lips were full like my father’s. My slightly too wide nose was the only feature on my face that I didn’t really like, but I adored the cute little mole over my lip. My course shoulder length hair was braided all up and I was rocking a long, flowing black sew in. The makeup that I’d had done at the MAC counter was flawless, but behind all of that, I was all in my feelings. Instead of letting anybody see me sweat, I put on a face like nothing was bothering me.

“I don’t really think old girl gon’ do nothing though. She’d be crazy to fight at the prom over some nigga. It’s too close to graduation,” Jordan said just as I put the weed out.

“Hmm, I ain’t gonna lie. If it was Kamal I’d beat that bitch’s face in with my stiletto heel.”

Bells laughed. “We already know how you are girl. Ain’t nobody tryna mess with Kamal.”

              “Better not.”

Jordan spoke up. “I love Travis and I’ll beat a bitch’s ass too, but I wouldn’t do it here tonight. I’d have to get that bitch later. I’m graduatin’ in May.”

“When you pissed off it don’t work like that. I don’t care where I’m at. When I’m mad all I see is red.” I wrapped the rest of the blunt up with a paper towel and put it back in my small, Coach wristlet.

“I’m high as hell,” Bells stated with a yawn.

“My eyes are red as hell.” I grabbed the Visine and squeezed a couple drops in each eye.

“Gimme some of that.” Jordan put her hand out.

“What’s goin’ on wit’ your dad?” Bells decided to ask.

Jordan had that “uhh ohh” look on her face.

Instead of being a bitch I pretended like I was as cool as a cucumber. “My pops is good. Just know that.”

She nodded, but didn’t press the issue.

“Let’s go,” I initiated our exit. “I wanna see if the rest of the crew is here.”

We filed out of the restroom and headed back to the gymnasium. When we bent the corner it was pandemonium. That bitch Shanice had been true to her word. She wasn’t even dressed for prom, but had on regular clothes instead. Tianna was being tossed back and forth, causing her short, hot pink dress to fly up, revealing her thong underwear. The whole crowd of students were surrounding them as we tried to get a closer look.

“Move, move out of the way now!” I heard a male voice yell behind us.

Two of the school’s security guards made their way through and attempted to break up the fight. Shanice and Tianna were going head to head, but their boo Tevin was nowhere to be seen. As a matter of fact, Tianna was actually there with another dude who didn’t go to our school. I wondered if he was her boo and if so he was about to find out about her cheating on him. If she was really pregnant it was a chance that her baby could belong to either of them.

“Dang, ya’ll see that?” My girl Cherie asked with an amused smirk on her face. She had a deep bronze complexion, and big pretty brown eyes. She always kept some braids in her hair. I bet she made the Africans rich as hell wherever she went to get her hair done at.

“Hell yeah,” I said letting my eyes scan her black, silk Japanese print dress. “You look cute as hell.”

She beamed as if we didn’t know that prom was about to be a bust.

That’s when we heard the principal’s voice over the loud speaker.

“Quiet! I want you all to be quiet and listen!”

Suddenly a calm came over the crowd because Mr. Hux didn’t play any games. My eyes followed security as they literally drug Shanice and Tianna away kicking and screaming. Tevin wasn’t around, but Tianna’s date followed them looking all oblivious to what was going on.

“The prom has been cancelled due to what just transpired and the fact that we have reason to believe that there is marijuana and alcohol on campus. You have made a travesty of your prom and you will all be searched on your way out.”

A chorus of ahhhhhhhs filled the room as everyone received the disappointing news.

“We didn’t even get to take pictures,” I complained with a pout. “Damn.”

Kamal pulled me close to him and lovingly kissed my cheek. “It’s okay baby girl. The party ain’t over. We got a suite at the Courtyard Marriot downtown, plenty of dranks and weed for you to smoke.”

He winked knowing that I was more of a smoker than a drinker. He would drink occasionally instead of smoking since he was an athlete.

“A’ight, but you gotta take some pictures of me in my dress nigga. I’m flawless.’

“Yes you are ma,” he agreed.

I looked around at my girls Jordan, Cherie, Bells and Nadia. Their boos Travis, Deshaun, Chris and Tremaine were standing behind each of them. At least I was surrounded by my closest friends. The night was still young and I was going to enjoy life while I could, but first I had to get rid of that damn blunt.

*  *  *

Back at the suite, the party continued. It was just the crew and we had the music blasting, the drinks flowing and the blunts burning. We were all so close, but I was closer to Jordan and Kamal than anyone else. All I wanted to do was talk to them about how scared I was of what could possibly happen with my father. The weed was helping with the anxiety and Jordan’s crazy ass was keeping the laughs rolling like always.

“Did ya’ll see how that bitch Tianna flew through the air when Shanice hit her wit’ that punch to her throat?” Jordan asked as she acted it out.

We all fell out laughing at her antics.

“Hell yeah,” Cherie chimed in. “I was enjoyin’ that fight, but I did wanna take pictures.”

              “Me too,” I said.

Nadia stood up and acted out the fight with Jordan. With chestnut brown skin and honey colored eyes, she was the thickest one in the crew and the shortest. At 5’1 she had enough ass and titties for all of us. A few blunts were in rotation and the boys were watching ESPN as we laughed and joked.

“Man, ya’ll really think Tevin knocked that chick up though?” Deshaun asked. He was about 6’0 with cinnamon toned skin.

They didn’t usually join in on our gossip, but Tevin played basketball with them.

“I’on know nigga. I ain’t worried ‘bout no dick other than mine,” Kamal put in his input with a sarcastic laugh.

Chris pounded him up. “I feel you on that shit. I’m fucked up and I’m tryna get me some.” He was the shortest of the guys at 5’10, with pretty green eyes and dark, smooth skin.

“Well, in that case, ya’ll need to head on to your own suite, ‘cause it ain’t but two bedrooms up in here,” Kamal’s fingers crept up my thigh and the heat between us told me that the party with our friends was over.

It was time for our own party.

Jordan and Travis were sharing the suite with us and the rest of the crew had their own rooms. Once they left me and Kamal retreated off to our own room in the suite. I didn’t even give a damn what Jordan and Travis were doing. All I wanted was to be distracted from what was really going on and Kamal was a professional at that. Although he wasn’t the one who took my virginity, I wasn’t really that experienced when it came to sex. I’d had sex with my first love Daniel, who had been shot to death less than two months after I lost my virginity. My father was a pimp and I knew all about sex, but he’d always taught me not to be promiscuous. Why was he on my mind while I was with my man?

“You okay baby?” Kamal was kissing my neck and he must’ve noticed how tense I was because he stopped.

“As much as I don’t wanna be, I’m worried ‘bout my daddy.” My teary eyes were on his.

He held me close to him and nuzzled my neck with his face. “I know you are ma. I can tell. I need you to know that no matter what happens, I’m here for you. I got a full scholarship to play ball at Tennessee State and I’m gonna get my degree. After that we gon’ get married, move back here, have some babies and live happily ever after. I got you ma. You know that right?”

I nodded. “Yeah babe. I know.”

              “I love you.”

              “I love you too.”

Instead of having sex on my prom night, my boyfriend simply held me in his arms. He knew that what I needed surpassed the physical and at such a young age he understood me. Jordan and Travis’s moans didn’t even change his agenda and I drifted off to sleep knowing that regardless of what happened, my man had my back.
