He opened his mouth and breathed down and he burned the first wave of arrows and spears.

And then another.

And another.

They all disintegrated and fell back to the ground in a pile of ashes.

Catapults were rolled out, and Kyra gasped as a massive boulder was fired up through the air. Theon breathed fire on it, and yet still it flew, soaring right by her head. Fire could not burn stone, and she knew they were in trouble. And down below, they were rolling out more of them.

Kyra closed her eyes and summoned her power, knowing Theon needed help. She held out a hand, palm forward, and sent out a blast of energy.

As she did, she opened her eyes to see the boulders racing up for them suddenly turn and descend back to the ground. Down below, hundreds of soldiers shrieked as they were flattened, as if comets were falling from the sky.

Theon roared his approval, and Kyra felt good, feeling her own power matching that of the dragon’s. She knew that nothing could stop her this time. She would free the capital, and free her father.

They dove lower, closing in on the capital, Theon unleashing a wave of fire and destruction, nothing able to hold them back. Block by block they were taking back the city.

They were just about to reach the dungeons, when suddenly, a sound arose that made the hair rise on her neck, a sound that seemed to tear apart the very heavens. It was so loud, so disorienting, Kyra couldn’t even tell where it was coming from. It was louder than a thousand horns, so loud that it sent a wave of energy her way, forcing Theon to fly sideways in the air until he could straighten out again.

Kyra turned and searched the skies, wondering what it could be—and she saw, breaking through the clouds, a sight that seared itself on her soul, a sight that she would never forget. It was the most terrifying sight of her life.

There appeared, inexplicably, the face of a dragon, emerging from the clouds. It was a roaring, enormous dragon, ten times the size of Theon. Bigger even than Theos.

Then, behind it, there appeared another dragon.

And another.

An army of dragons burst through the clouds, shrieking, blackening the sky. They breathed a wall of fire as they roared, all reaching out with their claws—and all flying right for Theon.

They came too fast, too unexpected, and there was no time to react.

And then, a moment later, Kyra felt Theon lurch. She looked back and saw one of the dragons had closed in from behind, had reached out with its claw and grabbed Theon’s tail. He spun Theon around in the air with his great might, and then threw him.

Theon was spinning out of control through the sky, Kyra on his back, the world a blur of motion all around her as she tried her best to hang on. They spun again and again, the spinning never ending, and soon they were plunging straight down toward the ground. Nothing could stop their fall.

Kyra looked down and saw a battalion of Pandesian soldiers below awaiting her. She then looked back up to the sky, and the last thing she saw before she hit the ground was the army of dragons, descending from the sky, claws out, and coming right for her.
