I smiled and resumed texting. We planned to hang out tomorrow afternoon. He said maybe we could get some lunch of something, and Sally wouldn’t be there. Thank God.

The wait for tomorrow seemed ridiculous, even though it was less than 24 hours. An hour before the plans, I was already dressed and ready to get out. Julie was getting dressed as well, coating herself with as much makeup as possible while I just had some subtle foundation. “Good luck!” she told me as I left.

According to Evan, he was planning to meet me at John’s, a campus restaurant that was quite decent. A hipster café that boasted sandwiches and coffee, I went there on occasion to get some food when I felt like treating myself. I walked into the café, ordered some iced coffee, and waited for Evan.

Who am I kidding? I thought. This is all a prank. He’s probably outside behind the bushes, recording this to show to his friends. Unless I want to be a viral video, I should probably get out now.

As I considered getting up, the door opened, and in walked Evan. The restaurant all stopped what they were doing to look at him. Even the cooks behind the counter stopped to stare at this football star. I could tell everyone was itching to talk to him, but none made any moves.

Evan sat at my table, a sincere look in his face. “Sorry that I was late,” he said. “Everyone kept stopping me. Some may say ‘Tough shit, you’re a football star,’ but can’t a guy have some privacy once in a while? I should be like those celebrities who walk around with a trench coat and sunglasses.”

The waitress came over, stars in her eyes. Evan ordered a smoothie and pasta. I got myself a deluxe grilled cheese. Evan spoke to the redhead waitress with some flirty undertones, and her eyes lit up. I was surprised she didn’t judge me. Then again, she probably thought I could never get Evan.

As she left, Evan sighed. “Gotta replenish my carbs after the game. Wanted a sandwich, but I have to stay at tip-top condition if I want to win the next round.”

We made some idle chit-chat as the waitress soon returned with our meals. As we ate, Evan sighed as his phone lit up.

“Fucking Sally is bothering me again,” he said.

I raised an eyebrow. “Why is that bad?” I asked.

“She was supposed to be a one-night stand, just like all the other women. But she thinks she’s my girlfriend, and it’s really annoying. I mean, the sex is great, don’t get me wrong…”

Fire blazed in my eyes, and I had to simmer down. Where did that come from? This is a guy who did get laid a lot, so why should I be salty about it?

“…but she’s way too clingy. She says I can go after other girls, but I’m almost afraid to. I should have learned not to mess with those crazy church girls, but hey, I can never resist.”

That made me glad my mamma was never too much of a church woman. She went to church every weekend out of obligation, but her lifestyle was anything but Christlike. As for myself, I was at that stage where I really didn’t know what to believe.

I listened to his grievances and offered him advice. “Maybe you should end it,” I said. And I made an inner eye roll as I said the next thing. “I mean, you’ve ended it with so many women before.”

He nodded. “True, true. But I’m still afraid. She looks like the girl who would pull a knife out on you. I’ve dealt with some clingy bitches before, but she gives me worse vibes than any of my ‘exes.’”

“Anything else on your mind?” I said.

“Still annoyed how my father won’t acknowledge me. Besides that, nothing else. What about you?”

My eyes wandered to my phone, where I saw that I got a new message on the dating app. It was spam, predictably. Getting my hopes up once again. “Not much. School is going okay. I just wish that I had a date, you know? I was never the best looking girl in high school, but I expected college would have a more open field. But not even the guys on my level will date me.”

Evan scoffed. “In a way, I envy ya. Sex gets old after a while, and I do wish people would leave me alone when I want it. But fame isn’t some switch you can flick off when you’re done with it, now is it?”

“I guess the grass is really greener on the other side,” I said.

“Yep. Those dumb phrases we heard as children are a lot more meaningful as adults, aren’t they?”

We finished the food, Evan tipped the blushing waitress, and then we walked outside. As we did, Evan looked at me, and I saw nervousness in his eyes. That was interesting. Why is an alpha male football player nervous?

“Listen, I…”

As he said this, we heard stomping approaching us. We turned around, and Sally was standing in front of us.

“What are you two doing?” she asked. Her tone of voice tried its damndest to sound casual, but I could tell there was aggression underneath those words.

“Just hanging, why?” Evan asked.

“And you didn’t bring me along?” she put her hands on her hips.

“You weren’t answering your texts,” he said.

“Just head to your dorm, and I’ll meet you there,” she said.

“Right.”

With that, Evan walked away, but not before saying bye to me. Sally looked like she was going to walk away as well, but then she turned around once Evan was out of view. She turned to me, and it was like I was staring at a different person.

She walked up to me, gritting those pearly whites, and put her fake nails around my neck as if she were about to kill. “Listen, bitch. I don’t know what you’re doing, but stay away from Evan. He would never touch the likes of you!”

In these cases, I usually ran away or begged with my attacker, but the words that came out of my mouth were almost out of instinct. “Then why are you worrying?”

As I said this, she backed away and raised her hand as if to slap me. But before she did, she walked away, running like a coward.

“The hell is your problem?” I said to myself. Evan wasn’t kidding around. This bitch was cray-cray! Evan should drop her right now, but there was an ache in my chest, as if to say it was too late. Like not bothering to put out a fire when it’s small and then trying to use a glass of water to put it out after it’s taken the whole house. That’s what my mamma used to say, anyway.

I headed back to my dorm, feeling numb for a good while.

Evan

“Why are you hanging around her? She’s nothing but trash looking to bum off you. I mean, you got her food, for crying out loud!”

As soon as I got home, Sally pulled me to the bed and screwed me dry. And afterwards, she became this raving lunatic before me. Her face was steaming red as she spoke.

“So, you’re comfortable with me fucking other women, but not having friends?” I pointed out.

“Maybe I’m not comfortable with either,” she replied. “I said something stupid, and you’re trying to take advantage of it by going after every girl possible. I didn’t even know your standards were so low.”

“She’s just a friend. I mean, why are you even caring that much, anyway?”

She crossed her arms and sighed. “Maybe you’re right. I’m just being a clingy bitch. But still, could you not hang out with her as much, and if you do, bring me along?”

I was the type of person who laughed when my friends got women who grabbed them by the balls. My best bro during middle to high school, Owen, became distant after dating a girl who stuck her claws deep into him. He always made excuses not to hang with me, and when I tried talking to him about it, he swore it wasn’t her, and that he just changed. But I always knew it was her controlling him, and didn’t get why he didn’t stand up for himself.

But now, I saw why. If Owen’s girlfriend was as crazy as Sally, I understood why he no longer hung with me that much. This chick was freakin’ bonkers, and I’ve been with some nuts before.

“Okay,” I lied. As if I would bring her around anywhere.

Jesus, dude. Just tell her off. That’s what my conscious was saying. However, I didn’t say anything just yet. The glare she gave me caused me to be silent.

“Good. What about her makes a good friend, anyway?”

“She’s good to talk to,” I said. “She listens. I dunno.”

Her face turned red again. “And I’m not good to talk to? Is that what you’re saying?”

Yes it is! You’re vapid and not interested in anything besides my football games and the sex. Whenever I try to say anything of substance, you blow me off, and I don’t mean with your mouth.

“Not at all,” I said. “I just like having different perspectives.”

“Fine,” she said. “Anyway, class is starting soon. Love you!”

With that, she returned to being her bubbly self, but not before giving me a kiss. As soon as she left, I rubbed her kiss from my mouth. I immediately started texting Alisha to see what she was doing. I waited a good while for a text back, but she never replied.

Alisha

I finished my classes and saw that Evan texted me a few times. But I hesitated on replying. After what happened between me and Alisha, of course I’d be a bit nervous to send him a reply. That bitch pretty much threatened to hurt me, even though we were just friends!

I returned to my dorm, where Julie sat on the bed, her makeup running from what appeared to be crying. “What’s wrong?” I asked her, my eyes looking at her while my pencil pressed on the worksheet I was assigned to finish.

“It’s no fair!” she said. “My boyfriend dumped me! Said I was too much of a burden.”

I didn’t quite know what to say. My problems were a lot different from hers, after all. I was dealing with a man who may or may not have feelings for me, and a crazy girlfriend who was mad because I dared befriend her love.

I gave her a hug and said if she needed to talk, I’d be there for her. Of course, a few hours later, she was texting another man and was chipper than ever. Oh, if only I could be like her.

Speaking of texting, I still needed to see what he wanted. I picked up the phone and read the messages.

She’s crazy, the message began, and then it explained how Sally went off on him for just being friends to me. After that, there were a few messages that asked if I got the text. That was hours ago. Sighing, I replied.

“Sorry. Was swamped with homework. That sucks, though. Do you want to talk about it some more?”

With my reply so late in the game, I didn’t expect a message back. However, less than a minute later, I got a message. “Sure,” it said. “Do you want to meet somewhere and talk about it?”

Did I ever? With that said, I needed to finish my homework, and besides that, I didn’t even feel safe going outside after what Sally did. “Care to meet me in my dorm?”

“Yes.”

I was shocked at how fast he replied. I expected him to ignore my request, but instead, he responded right away. I gave him the directions to my dorm, thinking that maybe he wouldn’t come. Of course, he had proven to me that he actually does care about as a friend, at the very least, but still. After getting screwed over so many times, your confidence does tend to go down, even if you’re proven wrong numerous times.

I waited for about thirty minutes. During that time, Julie left to go on a ‘hot date,’ making the wait a little lonely. I was a bit annoyed at how she was crying and swearing off men a few hours ago, and was now dating a man just a couple hours later. It was like jumping off a sinking ship and landing on another doomed boat. I really didn’t understand some of my female friends.

There was a knock on the door, bringing me out of my ranting state. I went to the doo and answered it right away. It was Evan!

“Looks like you came,” I said.

“Why wouldn’t I?” Evan replied.
