For Handelman, the revisionism of Scholem and Bloom (and of other Jewish thinkers such as Freud and Derrida) places them both inside and outside the tradition, a contradictory placement which has become the sine qua non of the tradition as it has been passed down and transformed in the modern period. We can only know tradition through revisionismbut according to Scholem and Bloom, it is only through revision that the tradition has ever known itself.
