“I got you.”

“Yo, call ya husband,” he said.

“I will, I promise.”

We ended our visit and I went back to my cell to do some more thinking. I came to the conclusion that it is most definitely worth it.

Chapter 2
Ramone

Neicey wasn’t the only one dealing with some shit right now. My life was all messed up right now, a complete mess. The woman I gave my heart to and I are not together anymore and I don’t get see my daughter as much as I would like. I remember the day my life changed for the worst.

Le’Lani, Zamier, and I were in the hospital for 10 hours. Her water broke but the baby was too stubborn to come out. Finally, at 6:00 in the morning, she was ready to push.

“I see the head, one more big push for me,” the doctor aid.

“Ahhhhh!” Lani screamed as she pushed.

“We have a baby girl,” the doctor announced.

I looked at Lani and could tell that she was tired.

“Umm, is there a way we can do a DNA test since she’s here?” Zamier asked.

I looked at him like he was crazy. Damn, the baby was just born and he already wanna do the test. What’s the rush?

“That’s fine with me, if it’s okay with her mother” the doctor said.

I looked over at Lani, she just shrugged her shoulders. “I guess,” she said faintly.

“Okay, who wants to go first?” the doctor asked.

“He can go first,” I spoke up.

“Alright.”

A week later, the results came back that I was not the father. Ever since that day, my and Lani’s relationship hasn’t been the same. I know I did all that talking about how I would be there for her and the baby no matter what, but I let my pride get in the way and I eventually ended up pushing her away. We started fighting and arguing over dumb stuff. She finally got fed up and left, taking my daughter with her, and I didn’t even try to stop her.

We’ve been broken up almost for a year and I would be lying if I said I didn’t still love her or miss her, but that shit was just too much to handle. I was in the car headed to Pops’ house to get my daughter for the weekend. When I pulled up to his house, I saw his car, Lani’s car and a car that I didn’t recognize.

I knocked on the door and waited for an answer. A minute later, Pops opened up the door.

“Wassup Pops?” I greeted my second father.

“Nothing, nothing at all,” he said, shaking his head.

I looked around the living room and saw boxes everywhere. Before I could even speak on it, my daughter came running around the corner.

Daddyyyyy!” Ranyla screamed as she jumped in my arms.

“Hey princess, I missed you,” I said, kissing her all over her face.

“I miss you more,” she giggled.

I looked up when I saw Lani coming down the stairs carrying a box with Zamier behind her.

“Mommy, my daddy here,” Ranyla announced.

Lani looked at me and gave me a weak smile. I noticed that her bitch ass baby daddy gave me the evil eye but I brushed it off and smirked.

“Wassup with all the boxes?” I asked.

“Um...”

Before she could even answer, Zamier spoke up. “She’s moving,” he said matter-of-factly.

“Is that right?”

“Yea.”

Pops came back in the room and took Ranyla out my arms. “Zamier, I think you need to let them two have a minute to talk. Mone and Lani, go in the den, now,” he said in a no nonsense tone.

I followed behind Lani to the den because we both knew that Pops wasn’t playing with our asses.

“So wassup? You was gon move and not tell me nothing?” I asked while closing the door.

She stood on the other side of the room looking everywhere but at me. “I was going to tell you.”

“Oh really?” I asked sarcastically. “So where you moving to?”

“With Zamier,” she said in a low tone.

“Come again?” I said, as I walked towards her, which made her take two steps back. “So what? Y’all a fucking couple now? What’s all that shit you was popping about not wanting to be with him?”

“He said he wanted to be close to his daughter without having to come pick her up from here, besides you don’t want me no more, so why does it even matter?” she said, finally looking me in my eyes.

“So the fuck what!” I yelled. “I have to come pick my daughter up whenever the fuck you feel like letting me see her, so why the hell can’t he do it?”

I couldn’t believe she was in my face spitting this bullshit. Who the fuck is this, because this sure ain’t the girl I fell in love with.
She can’t be fucking serious.

“I’ll be by to pick up NyNy Sunday night,” she said, acting like what I just said didn’t mean shit.

“Speaking of, I don’t want my daughter around that nigga. I don’t know him like that to be trusting him around her 24/7,” I said.

She looked at me like she was offended. “So what are you saying?”

“I’m saying, if you move in with that nigga, I’m taking you to court for custody of Ranyla; my daughter.”

“Fuck you Ramone, that’s my daughter!” she yelled.

“And? Don’t you have another one? Since you wanna play house with that nigga, do it with y’all daughter because I’ll be damned if you do it with mines.”

She shook her head. “You ain’t shit, after I treated
your
son like my own, welcomed him into
my
house, the same house yo as still laying up in…you know what, fuck it and you. See you in court muthafucka,” she said, brushing past me and walking out the door.

I just shook my head and sat on the couch with my head in my hands, wondering how the hell we went from being in love to this bullshit.

“You know, I was once told if you love something, let it go,” Pops said, walking in the room with Ranyla on his heels. “That’s my daughter and I love her, but she has to learn from her own mistakes. Personally, I don’t trust that nigga as far as I can throw him. I have bullets with his name on em as soon as he fucks up. I protected her all her life because she’s my youngest child and my only daughter, but now the only thing I can do now is be there for her when she gets hurt.”

“No offense or disrespect Pops, but your daughter is on some bullshit,” I said as I watched my daughter play with her toys.

“It’s not her, it’s him. He just came in here the other day telling her that she needed to move in with him because he wasn’t going to let another nigga raise his daughter.”

“They’re crazy as hell if they think I’m going to let my daughter live with them, I’ll be damned.”

“Daddy, I want ice cream and I want to see Keiyari,” Ranyla said with her hands on her hips.

“You are too grown for me,” I chuckled.

“Have you heard from your sister?” Pops asked.

“She called me the other day; apparently her and Kell are into it again. It seems like Micah and Janae are the only ones in a happy relationship,” I said.

“All relationships go through stuff, but only real relationships make it through and come out strong,” he said, standing up. “Now get out and go spend time with your daughter, I have a date.” He laughed while leaving the room.

Lani

I couldn’t believe Ramone had the audacity to tell me that he was going to take me to court for custody of Ranyla. It would be a cold day in hell before I let that happen. He had a lot of nerve trying to be mad at me when he was the one who turned his back on me. That nigga talked a good game while I was pregnant, talking about what he was gon do, but the moment we got the results, his ass folded.

That’s crazy because I accepted Keiyari, treated him like he was my son and everything. I accepted the fact that he had a son before we got together but now he wanna act funny because I conceived a child with someone else when we were broken up. All I can do is shake my head. That’s some bullshit. I guess he doesn’t like it when the shoe is on the other foot.

“What’s wrong with you?” Zamier asked as he drove.

“Nothing,” I said.

“You sure? You seem real salty about something.”

“I said I’m fine,” I rolled my eyes.

I looked down at my vibrating phone, it was an unknown number but I answered anyway. “Hello.”

“You have a collect call from, Neicey. If you wish to accept these charges, press zero.”

“Hey mami!” I said after pressing zero.

“Wassup boo? What’s going on?”

“Nothing really, just missing my crazy sister,” I laughed.

“I miss you too. What my nieces doing?” she asked.

“Well, Zyla is sleeping and Ranyla is with her dad.”

“Okay, well, give Zy kisses for me. So how you and knucklehead doing?”

“Good,” I lied.

Neicey was locked up and had more important things to worry about instead of her brother’s and my problems.

“Cut the bull, Le’Lani. I’m your sister so you don’t have to lie to me. Mone already told me that y’all not together no more,” she said, shocking me.

I sighed. “It’s not that important Neicey, so don’t even worry about it. The only thing that matters right now is getting you out of jail.”

“I’m not worried about that right now, I’m wondering how you’re feeling.”

“I’m dealing with it the best way I know how. I mean it’s really nothing I can do about it now.”

“Alright boo, you know I’m still here for you even though I’m in a fucked up situation right now. No matter who you’re with, you will always be my sister.”

“I know. I’m coming to see you as soon as I finished getting settled in and stuff.”

“Alright, you do that.”

“Love you.”

“Love you back.”

My mind was in one place and my heart was in another. I would be lying if I said I didn’t still love Ramone but he did me real foul. I took responsibility for my actions, so I guess there was nothing for me to do but put on my big girl panties and suck it up.

MJ

If it’s not one thing, it’s another. It seems like my mom and dad can never be happy for too long. Every time they get good, some shit always gotta happen to fuck them up. I was fifteen years old now and I peep shit even when they think I’m not paying attention. When ma was in the hospital, I thought I would never get to see her again. Now she’s locked up and I feel the same way.

My dad is really lucky to have a woman in his life. She took me in and raised me as her own without any problems; she did the same with Tyriq. Not a lot of women would do some stuff like that. Even when they had broken up and she was with Kamil, I could tell that she still loved my dad. They have this crazy kind of love that only they and the people around them can understand.
