“This is not your fault, and there wasn’t anything you could have done.” Now
Nikkos
sounded guilty. “I shouldn’t have let you go out by yourself. I should have been quicker getting to you. This is all my fault. Neither one of you would have been hurt if I had been where I was supposed to be. I know where that is now, by your side. I’m just sorry it took me so long to realize it.”

Watching the two males look at each other and hearing the confession, she thought maybe she was safe from being raped after all. There was definitely something going on between the two of them. Maybe they were lovers and had had a fight and that was why the one was out by himself and got assaulted like he did.

The one that had been holding her lower body down had let go to hold the other one’s hand. She slowly tried to slip out of the other one’s grip while they were concentrating on each other. It didn’t work. She was still in the arms of the one in the bed, and he tightened his grip on her. Both of their heads snapped back to her. They did not release each other’s hands, but both growled at her. Growled?
What the hell
? They sounded like animals. If possible, the eyes of the one in the bed had gotten darker. And the turquoise ones were…glowing?

“Wait a minute, four times? I was shot four times?” She knew one was in her back. It had to be, as bad as it hurt, but she couldn’t tell where else. Nowhere else seemed to hurt. “Where?”

The dark haired one turned his gaze down. “In your back.”

“And where else?”

“Nowhere else, just your back. One in your left shoulder. One near your left kidney. One hit your right lung, which was why you were having a hard time breathing. And one just barely missed your spinal cord right in the middle of you back.”

“Yeah right,” she replied.

He understood why she didn’t believe him. She should have been dead after the shots that she took, and if it hadn’t been for the good doctor and his blood, she would be. Technically she had died, twice. The second time they had lost her on the table, he made the doc give her more of his blood, and he had done CPR on her until his arms felt like they were falling off. Then some more until his blood started healing her from the inside and they had gotten her heart beating on its own. Mikhaila and Lucian had told him several times to stop, that she was gone, but he could not let her go. Somewhere deep down he knew he had to save her to save himself and to save
Adrian
. He knew
Adrian
would follow her to the next life if she passed on, and he would follow
Adrian
.

She cut into his thoughts. “If I was shot four times in the back, I would be dead.”

He knew he had to tell them both the whole story sooner or later but hoped it could wait until later. He looked at
Adrian
. The male was about to break into pieces, and he wasn’t sure how he would take the news. He also wasn’t sure how the female would take not only the news of what they were, but also that she now had his blood running through her veins and would forever be linked to him. He knew
Adrian
didn’t take the news too well, and he knew the benefits of their blood.

He tried to delay the talk a little while. “You both need to rest. Why don’t you go back to sleep, and we’ll talk about this later.” To her he said, “If you’re in pain, I can have doc come in and give you something that will probably help you sleep, too.”

“I don’t want to sleep. I want to know what really happened. I want to go home.” The last came out a whisper, almost a prayer.
Nikkos
could tell by the sound of her voice she thought they were going to keep her here forever. Actually, if they had any say in it, they would. They needed her. She just didn’t know it yet. She would learn soon enough there would be no keeping the three of them apart. He wasn’t sure how he knew this, he just did.

Nikkos
sighed. What he was about to tell her pained him. “Are you sure you wanna hear everything?”

Adrian started to protest. “No, not yet, let her rest first. She needs to heal before she hears everything we have to tell her.”

“I don’t want to rest. I want to know what you are trying to hide from me.”

“Little one, please wait a little while to ask your questions. I don’t think you are strong enough to hear everything right now.” By the look on
Adrian
’s face,
Nikkos
could tell he wasn’t sure he wanted to know everything right now, or ever for that matter. Something really bad had happened in the med room.

“I don’t really care what you think.” Anstice looked into his eyes. “Tell me
now!

Nikkos
looked into the fierce little one’s eyes. Maybe she would take the news better than he thought. After all, she was the strongest human he knew. Besides, she was their mate. He would do anything she told him to. He looked to
Adrian
and apologized. “I’m sorry, my man, but she is going to have to know the truth sooner or later.”

“I know, but I don’t know if
I
want to know it.”

“You don’t. But you need to.”

Adrian
closed his eyes. “Go ahead then, get it over with.”

Chapter Six

The dark one took a deep breath and let it out with a sigh. “Please listen to everything before you decide whether to believe me or not, and do not interrupt, okay?”

She wanted to argue, but she was finally getting her way and hearing the truth, or at least what she hoped was the truth. “Okay.”

“You were shot four times in the back. You lost a lot of blood before we could get you back here. You desperately needed blood. We don’t keep your kind’s blood on hand.”

Her kind? What was that supposed to mean, she wanted to know, but didn’t interrupt.

Adrian
wanted to give you his, but he had lost too much already.”

Adrian, that was his name. She looked at his face and he looked as if he were in a great deal of pain again. The dark one seemed to see it, too.

“Don’t get me wrong, he fought like hell to be the one to provide for you, but it just wasn’t happening. If he hadn’t passed out, he would have made sure one way or the other it would be his blood running through your veins, even if it had meant his life.” She watched as the look of adoration on the dark one’s face made
Adrian
turn his gaze away. “Like I said, you needed blood, so I offered to provide. I knew it was your only chance.”

“Why didn’t you just take me to the hospital?”

“We knew they couldn’t have saved you.”

“And what made you think you could?”

“I’m getting to that, just…let me…gods, how do I say this? We’re different from your kind.”

“You keep saying ‘your kind.’ What exactly is my
kind?

“Humans.”

“Okay, so if my kind is human, what is your kind?” Sarcasm, yeah this was going well. She wasn’t going to believe anything he was about to tell her. She’s was starting to think they were crazy.

“We are…not human.”

“What are you, then?” She decided not to pull away and try to escape
Adrian
’s hold again…yet.

“Vampires.”

She thought about it for a few seconds.

“Well, that explains everything.” She started laughing, really laughing. Okay, maybe they weren’t the only ones who were insane, maybe she had gone insane, too. Both males looked at her as if wondering what they had missed and what she could possibly be thinking.
Adrian
spoke up first.

Cardia mou
, are you okay?”

“Oh yes, I’m great. Now that I know what is really going on I’m perfect.”

Adrian looked up to the dark one as if looking for some direction. The standing one just shrugged as he clearly wasn’t sure what to make of her response. “Wanna let us in on the joke? You believe me?”

“Of course I believe you. Now that I know I’m dreaming, might as well play along with it.”

“Why would you think you are dreaming?”

“Because vampires don’t exist. I must have been reading my book about sexy vampires when I fell asleep. My imagination has never been this vivid, but damn, my fantasies are getting better and better by the minute.”

The dark one hung his head and shook it back and forth. “You are not asleep. This is not a dream. It is very real, and we
are
vampires.”

“Yeah, okay, so what now? You want to bite me to prove it?”

“If I have to, I will.”

She raised her eyebrows at him and teased, “Will I like it?”

She was challenging him, and he looked tempted to take her blood right then and there to prove his point. “Are you in pain?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Would you be in pain if you were dreaming?”

“Only my back hurts. I’m sleeping on a stretcher in the back of the ambulance, and that’s probably why it hurts. Trust me, I know what being shot in the back feels like, and it’s a lot worse than this.”

“You’ve been shot before?”

She hesitated. “Yes, a long time ago.”

“While you were working in the ambulance?”

“That’s my business. You don’t need to know about it.”

* * * *

Adrian
lay there listening to the two of them argue over whether she was dreaming or not.
Nikkos
was getting nowhere with her. Every argument he had, she reasoned away.
Adrian
did the only thing he could think of to show her she wasn’t dreaming. He put his hand under her chin, gently tilted it up, and placed his lips on hers. She immediately stilled and stopped whatever argument she was giving
Nikkos
at the time.

He tasted amazing, like spices and coffee. She normally hated coffee, but tasting it on his tongue, this, a girl could get used to. She figured if this was a dream, she might as well enjoy it so she kissed him back, exploring deep into his mouth. She
so
did not want to wake up. The kiss felt so real she began to wonder if she really was dreaming. How could a man in her dreams taste this good? How could a dream get her this hot? Her imagination was
not
this vivid. She tried to break away from his mouth but he had his hand on the nape of her neck, holding her to him.

She tasted like spun sugar and vanilla, and she was kissing him back.
Adrian
didn’t know if he would ever be able to get enough of her. He wondered what other flavors he might discover, given the chance to taste her elsewhere. She started to pull away, but he couldn’t have that. He needed to taste more and more of her until he was completely sated.

His hunger would have to wait, though. She suddenly stopped kissing him, and her entire body went rigid.
Adrian
could smell the fear coming from her. It smelled like the forest after a thunderstorm. He knew she was finally starting to realize she was awake. He released her neck slowly. He didn’t want her to be afraid of them. He just wanted her to know the truth.

She lifted her head and looked into his eyes. “I’m not dreaming, am I?” she whispered.

“No, you’re not,” the two males said in unison.

Her whole body started to shake, and her eyes glistened with tears that neither Adrian nor
Nikkos
could stand to see her shed. They both reached for her cheek at the same time to stop the flow of tears that was sure to come any second. She flinched away from both of them and tried to move away, but
Adrian
still had his arm tight around her waist. When she moved her head away from them, their hands met, and they both grasped the other and tried to pull strength from each other.
