Bridget and Aaron also had three children by now, having had a girl, a girl, and a boy, each of them almost indescribably gorgeous, with cherubic faces, jet-black corkscrew curls, and striking hazel eyes that almost appeared gold in certain light.

Veronica had had a set of twins, two boys, and was now pregnant again. She’d told me she was hoping for a girl this time, so that she could name her Savannah to thank me for saving her life.

Soon after the gator attack, two specialist doctors from DC had arrived, a married couple, and after spending some time with Veronica, they took her back to their clinic in DC, where they treated patients with disorders similar to hers on an inpatient basis. About three months later, Veronica had returned to Beaumont City, practically a whole new person. She could still be sassy and snarky at times, but the edge of mean-spirited-ness she’d used to have about her was long gone. She now frequently smiled and laughed, quickly making a few new friends shortly after arriving back in town.

As far as her compulsions, she told me she was still “funny” about food and probably always would be, and after just a single meal with her, I could see how this might be the case. She was much, much better, though, cutting a chicken breast into exactly ten pieces and then each of those pieces into precise thirds, but then diving into a side of “loaded” mashed potatoes, seeming not to care at all that she didn’t know exactly how many individual pieces of chive and bacon were within the potatoes. Her walking had vastly improved, too, to the point that other than a very occasional frowning pause or stutter-step, I would have never known that she had previously had an issue.

It was maybe a month or so after she’d returned to town that she formally met a very tall, smiling man named Adam, who was a member of Trevor’s “inner circle” pride. She’d been kind of eyeing him from afar at different times around town, and Bridget and I had been noticing, so we’d finally introduced the pair. Exactly six months later to the day, they’d been married in a fairly small, intimate ceremony at their favorite local restaurant. Bridget and I served as Veronica’s attendants, and Snowball, wearing a garland of silk roses around her neck, was her flower girl.

Veronica was never able to recover a single memory of her life before being frozen, but after her boys were born, she told me she’d come to a place of peace about it, and she seemed sincere.

“Maybe there’s a reason I’m not supposed to remember anything. Maybe my past wasn’t all that great. It could be a blessing that I don’t have any memories. And besides, now when the kids ask what I did before being frozen, I can tell them that I
might
have been an Olympic rhythmic gymnast. We’ll never know for sure.”

On the evening of our fifth wedding anniversary, once the kids were in bed, Trevor led me to the formal living room, which had been filled with dozens of fresh flower arrangements he’d given me that morning, saying they were just “part one” of my anniversary present. After sitting me down on one of the leather couches in the rose-scented room, he then presented me with a diamond-and-emerald necklace so exquisite I couldn’t even form words at first, even though I’d seen the necklace before. It had caught my eye in the front window of a very upscale jeweler in DC during our last trip there, and I’d quietly admired it, but I hadn’t said too much because the price was absolutely astronomical. Not that I’d thought that Trevor couldn’t afford it, but with our fast-growing kids always needing
something
, just the very idea of him spending so much on a necklace for me had almost made me feel embarrassed.

But now here it was in front of me, being presented to me by the man I’d grown to love more than I’d ever dreamed was possible.

After several long moments, I was finally able to speak, though with a little tremor in my voice. “It’s so gorgeous. Thank you, Trevor.”

Smiling, he fastened it around my neck, the feel of his fingers brushing against my skin still causing butterflies in my stomach after five years of marriage and three kids. Soon, once we’d shared a long kiss that made me curl my toes, I told him that I wanted to give him
his
gift. I’d been keeping it a secret, waiting to present it to him for about three weeks.

“My gift to you isn’t something you can unwrap. I guess maybe you can put your hand over it, though.” Leaning back on the couch, I took his hand and placed it over the lower half of my stomach. “You won’t be able to feel your present kick for a few more months, but right now you can probably feel the tiniest beginnings of a bump.” Surveying his expression of extreme surprise with complete satisfaction, I smiled. “So, do you think we should return this gift for something else? Or are you pretty happy with it?”

His ear-to-ear grin as he pulled me into his arms told me that he was much more than “pretty happy” with his gift. I wrapped my arms around his strong shoulders, much more than “pretty happy” myself,
feeling as if my life were a dream.
