1 - El cíborg

Al abrir la puerta, vio un atestado bulevar de tiendas de materia, espacios dramáticos, relicarios, teatros comulgatorios multiforma, salones coloquiales y parques de flores. Una compleja hidroescultura de cascadas y arroyos aéreos se extendía por doquier desde unas fuentes centrales, con agua corriente sostenida por reorientaciones subatómicas de su tensión de superficie, de modo que arcos y bóvedas radiantes y transparentes subían, bajaban, chapoteaban y chorreaban con olímpica indiferencia por la gravedad. Las fluidas aguas atrapaban y coloreaban la luz que se derramaba desde las altas ventanas linderas, las pancartas publicitarias y los altos paneles que se abrían a la Mentalidad regional. Pétalos de lirios de agua flotaban a la deriva.

Bajo esta belleza había una cruda fealdad. La gran mayoría de las personas estaban presentes como maniquíes. Evidentemente se trataba de un sitio destinado a señoriales, crípticos u otras escuelas que enfatizaban el uso de la telepresencia. Como Faetón ya no tenía acceso a ningún filtro sensorial, todas estas personas (que para un observador en Sueño Superficial lucirían espléndidos atavíos y un porte elegante) le parecían maniquíes grises, obtusos y sin rostro.

Quizá una bella música atravesara la zona; excluido de la Mentalidad, Faetón era sordo a ella. Aquí y allá había hospicios y piscinas dramáticas preparadas para enviar sueños, parciales, llamadas, mensajes o cualquier forma de telepresencia. Todos los canales estaban cerrados para Faetón, y él estaba mudo. Signos dragontinos llameaban en el aire, desplegando mensajes ininteligibles: Faetón era un analfabeto que no podía leer el subtexto ni el hipertexto. Quizá en Sueño Medio hubiera guías de pensamiento para permitirle recordar, como si lo supiera desde siempre, dónde hallar el transporte público que buscaba. Sin asistencia mnemónica, Faetón estaba amnésico. Quizá hubiera adornos fastuosos en los escenarios oníricos que flotaban en el aire, indescriptiblemente bellos, o señales y mapas para indicarle en qué parte de esa vasta explanada estaba la senda o carretera que buscaba. Pero Faetón estaba ciego.

A veces, entre los maniquíes, asomaba el rostro de un realista o vivarianísta. Sus ojos se opacaban al posarse en Faetón, y sus miradas resbalaban sobre él sin verlo. Todos los filtros sensoriales estaban sintonizados para excluirlo. También el mundo era ciego a su presencia.

Esperaba que las pancartas descendieran cuando él mirase, pero en cambio seguían de largo, con sus luces chillonas y sus imágenes abigarradas. Hasta los anuncios lo ignoraban.

No importaba. Faetón trató de concentrar sus pensamientos en los pasos siguientes. ¿Cómo averiguar dónde estaba? ¿Cómo hallar Talaimannar? ¿Cómo llegar allá? Una vez allá, ¿cómo averiguar por qué Sabueso Sofotec recomendaba aquel lugar? Tenía que pedir ayuda o instrucciones.

Faetón se ocultó detrás de un matorral; el agua ondulante de las fuentes formaba un techo traslúcido sobre él. ¿Alguien miraba? Supuso que no.

Se quitó la armadura y la cubrió con nanomaterial, programándolo para que pareciera una capa con capucha. Extrajo nanomaterial de esa prenda negra y se trazó círculos alrededor de los ojos, formando una negra máscara dominó. Así ambos quedaron disfrazados. Ojalá bastara para engañar las miradas distraídas. Programó el traje para que lo siguiera a distancia fija, eludiendo obstáculos; para que lo siguiera como un perro, habría dicho Dafne.
